It was presented in 1953 as an evolution of the already competitive 340 America, then it imposed itself in some of the most prestigious international competitions, helping to feed the myth of the Prancing Horse in the world.
We are talking about the Ferrari 340 MM Spider by Vignale, the daughter of an invention by Enzo Ferrari aimed at raising the performance bar of the 340 America in view of the 1953 World Sportscar Championship. The changes extended the wheelbase of the new 340 MM to 2, 5 m compared to the previous 2.42, in addition to allowing the adoption of rims with a more generous diameter which contributed to increasing traction and stability to an already very competitive car.
The 4.1-liter engine was capable of delivering a whopping 300 hp.
In the World Sportscar Championship, which included major Endurance competitions, the Ferrari 340 MM won the Mille Miglia, contributing to the 1953 title, while in 1954 it triumphed at the 24 Hours of Spa, the 1000 Km of the Nurburgring and the Giro di Sicilia.
The model that will be auctioned on May 14 has been modified by the coachbuilder Vignale, who added three slits on the wheel arches, triangular air intakes on the rear bumpers, a new hood and a new arrangement of the exhausts.
The model was initially painted in dark blue and white, before being brought back to the current Ferrari red.
