First green light for MEPs to stop the sale of cars and vans with fossil fuel engines (petrol, diesel and LPG) from 2035. The Environment Committee of the European Parliament approved by a narrow majority (46 votes in favor, 40 against and two abstentions) , its position on the rules presented by the EU Commission to review CO2 emissions performance standards for new vehicles.


    The vote confirms the Brussels proposal which provides for the sale of zero-emission cars and vans from 2035.


    The text will now go through the plenary session of the European Parliament in June.

This is the first vote of the European Parliament on a regulation of the 'Fit for 55' package, which aligns various legislative texts with the new EU climate target, which provides for a 55% cut in CO2 emissions by 2030. Among other amendments approved, which will have to pass the plenary exam and then be negotiated with the EU Council, a proposal for targeted funding to ensure a just transition in the automotive sector, and a common EU methodology to assess the entire life cycle of emissions CO2 emissions from cars and vans placed on the Community market.
