There are regional differences in how many people choose an electric car

Almost 400,000 electric cars were newly registered in Germany in 2020.
But the vehicles were distributed very differently regionally - this is shown by a study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) .

Response to fuel prices: is the big electric boom coming? By Arvid Kaiser
According to the study, people and companies in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg bought twice as many electric cars or plug-in hybrids as in eastern Germany.
In the two southern federal states, there were around six new registrations for every 100,000 inhabitants in 2020.
In Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia there were only three on average.
In the districts of Emmendingen in Baden-Württemberg and Rhön-Grabfeld in Bavaria, around a third of all new registrations in 2020 were electric cars.
Income is not the only thing that matters
During the survey, the researchers involved also tried to narrow down the causes of the sometimes large differences.
Presumably, as the evaluation showed, it is not only income that plays an important role in the possible purchase of an e-car, but also the charging infrastructure.
"In order to correct this imbalance, the federal government could also extend purchase incentives to older, used electric cars and adjust the level of the current purchase subsidy to income," suggested the scientist Sandra Wappelhorst.
»The federal government should also continue to promote private charging stations in residential buildings and publicly accessible charging stations.«

The scientists also examined a connection with environmental awareness.
In order to determine this size, they chose the share of the vote of the Greens in the elections to the European Parliament as a measure.
And found a correlation in all regions, from very urban to very rural: the more people voted green, the more e-cars were among the new registrations.
