Consumers can buy the so-called nine-euro monthly ticket from Deutsche Bahn from May 23, provided the Bundestag and Bundesrat approve the project.
Bavaria has already threatened to block the upcoming vote in the Bundesrat: "If the federal government believes that it can be applauded on the back of the federal states for a three-month consolation patch and that others should foot the bill, then it is very wrong." Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) told the dpa news agency in Munich.
"A real relief for the citizens would be a permanent strengthening of local public transport with more federal funds," says Bernreiter.
Instead, the federal government offers “a flash in the pan”.
If the federal government does not fully compensate for the costs of the ticket and does not significantly increase the regionalization funds as promised in the coalition agreement, it will run into a wall in the Bundesrat.
Special tickets for June, July and August
In June, July and August, the special tickets are intended to enable travel in local and regional transport throughout Germany – for nine euros a month and thus much cheaper than normal monthly tickets.
According to Deutsche Bahn plans, the discounted monthly tickets are to be sold from May 23 in the DB Navigator app, on the Bahn website, at around 5,500 Deutsche Bahn ticket machines and in more than 400 DB travel centers in train stations.
Tickets can also be bought online or at the counter from other transport companies.
Many associations have already announced that they also want to start selling on May 23rd.
The cheap ticket is part of the relief package with which the traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP is reacting to the high energy prices.
At the same time, it should be a taster offer to win more customers for buses and trains.
Parliament and the Federal Council will have to vote on the project next week.
