Every car must have a first-aid kit on board – and of course the contents must also comply with the regulations.

An expert explains what has to go in.

Munich – For many drivers, the first-aid kit is often – fortunately – not used during the entire life of the car.

Probably also because you hardly ever need it, many do not care about the correct equipment - or expiry dates of dressing material.

But during the main inspection (HU), the examiners from organizations such as TÜV, Dekra, GTÜ or KÜS check the content.

The rules have just changed.

Two medical masks have belonged in every car first aid kit since February 2022.

First aid kit: According to an expert at the HU, everything must be in there

According to Johannes Kautenburger, motor vehicle expert at the expert organization KÜS, a first-aid kit or first-aid bag must meet the DIN standard 13164.

This stipulates that a first-aid brochure, a roll of plaster on a spool and plaster strips in various sizes, a dust-protected packaged ready-made plaster set and plaster scissors are included in the contents.

In addition, an adhesive bandage, various bandages for fingers and fingertips, bandages in different sizes, fixation bandages, triangular bandages, a rescue blanket, compresses for wound dressing, wet wipes for cleaning the skin, disposable rubber gloves and bandage cloths should be available.

Interesting for all vacationers: In other countries, in addition to first-aid kits, some rather strange things have to be on board in the car.

First Aid Kit: Medical face masks are now mandatory

Important: The DIN standard was modified on February 1, 2022.

Now only a triangular cloth is necessary, two medical face masks are now a mandatory part of the first aid kit.

For the content according to the old standard (2014 version), however, there is a transitional period until January 31, 2023, i.e. exactly one year.

This is also due to the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), since the use has not yet been adopted in the corresponding paragraph 35h.

According to the expert, with or without legal requirements, it is advisable to expand the equipment in the first-aid kit to include a face mask and hand disinfectant.

Despite a possible risk of infection from the corona virus, the general obligation to provide first aid remains in place.

A few other rules relating to cars have also changed in 2022.

First aid kit: TÜV inspectors also pay attention to expiration dates

The availability of a first aid kit is checked at the HU.

According to paragraph 35h of the StVZO, such a first aid kit must be available in the car.

Missing is considered a defect, and a traffic check will result in a fine of up to 10 euros.

The first-aid kit should be placed in the car so that it is easily accessible so that it can be reached quickly for use.

The inspector not only checks whether there is a first-aid kit on board, but also the condition of the contents.

Since the sterile packaged contents such as compresses have an expiry date, checking the expiry date is also part of it.

It is best to check regularly that the content is still complete, ready for use and up to date.

If the expiry date of the dressing material has passed, it should be replaced.

You either buy the individual components – or you buy a new first-aid kit right away.
