Ferrari Roma Tailor Made

The story of this unique example of Ferrari Roma began when Evan Orensten and Josh Rubin, founders of the award-winning independent US magazine Cool Hunting dedicated to design, culture and technology, were offered the opportunity to configure a Ferrari Roma for find out how far the Cavallino's customization program could go.

The two met Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari Chief Design Officer, in the Ferrari Tailor Made showroom in New York, where they asked him to examine some of the ideas and materials discovered in the Land of the Rising Sun where they had just been, to create a Tailor Made version. in collaboration with Cool Hunting.

Flavio Manzoni and his team were inspired by the similarities between Italian and Japanese culture and philosophy of design: absolute devotion to quality, emotional harmony with the customer and excellent craftsmanship that has been handed down from generation to generation.

Thus was born the Ferrari Roma characterized by some exclusive materials worked with traditional Japanese techniques, but revisited in the light of the typical Ferrari spirit of innovation to meet the essential functionality and durability requirements for a contemporary high-performance car.

The traditional Japanese indigo dye inspired the color scheme of the Ferrari Roma and in particular the bright blue color of the exterior, developed especially for this car and called Indigo Metal.

In Japan, Orensten and Rubin learned that the tincture is produced with a plant which, once collected and fermented, is transformed into Sukumo: dried indigo mixed with lye, sake and limestone powder with which the authentic dye is created. indigo Hon-Ai, used in ancient times for its antibacterial properties on linen, sheets and clothes.

The same color range was used to connect the car's exterior and interior.

The indigo hue is also found in the Sakiori fabric used for the seat inserts and carpets.

The leitmotif of the indigo is also taken up by the sky of the Ferrari Roma's cockpit, while the interior door handles of the Roma are covered with hand-woven black leather in homage to the tsukami, the ancient art of wrapping the hilt of Katana swords.

From a family-owned Kyoto business known for its iconic copper tea containers came the inspiration for the plating that graces the iconic gear shift gate and paddle shifters.

The double cockpit arch, rims and Kamon are also copper-colored.

The ad hoc emblem on the personalization plate set in the central armrest and on the door sill is a "Kamon", a seal handed down from generation to generation in Japanese families.

Designed by Kyogen, it represents a wheel of an ox cart (vehicle in vogue among the aristocrats of the Heian period, 794 - 1185), whose eight spokes are reminiscent of the pistons of the V8 engine of the Ferrari Roma.

The number is also echoed by the eight wave crests that surround the wheel as a symbol of luck, strength and resilience.

Even the Ferrari Roma Tailor Made can count on the performance of the 620 hp turbo V8, belonging to the family of engines that won the International Engine of the Year award for four consecutive years.

It will be exhibited in the Ferrari Tailor Made Showroom during New York Design Week.
