The atmosphere of the Sun never seen so closely, here are the first images

Vortices of gas, very long filaments and gigantic flares: never before has the Sun's atmosphere been observed so closely and the first images captured from this record distance are due to the Solar Orbiter probe, from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), thanks to the contribution of Italian instruments, such as the Coronographer Metis (ANSA)

Vortices of gas, very long filaments and gigantic flares: never before has the Sun's atmosphere been observed so closely and the first images captured from this record distance are due to the Solar Orbiter probe, from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), thanks to the contribution of Italian instruments, such as the Metis coronograph, the first instrument of its kind capable of observing the solar corona simultaneously in the visible and ultraviolet band, thus providing a very detailed picture of the processes that govern the expansion of solar plasma in interplanetary space .

Financed and managed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Metis was born from the collaboration of the National Institute of Astrophysics (Inaf), the Universities of Florence and Padua, the Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the National Research Council (Cnr-Ifn) and by an industrial consortium formed by OHB Italia and Thales Alenia Space Italia.

The images were taken by the Solar Orbiter during the close passage to the Sun last March 26, when the probe was only one third of the distance between the Earth and the Sun. From this position, the Metis instrument was able to take images of the corona with unprecedented detail, revealing a structure made of long filaments and very dynamic plasma and magnetic fields, paving the way for new research on the physical processes responsible for new investigations on the physical processes that determine the acceleration of the solar wind and the phenomena impulsive, which can have a potential impact on the forecast of geomagnetic storms and for the solar weather in general.
