From June, the federal government is planning to ease the burden on motorists by reducing the energy tax on fuel prices.

But how much will this bring down gas prices?

Due to the Ukraine war, petrol prices are at record highs.

According to ADAC, drivers had to pay up to 2.19 euros for a liter of Super E10 in March, which is 45 cents more – a liter of diesel cost 2.29 euros and was around 65 cents more expensive than before.

When filling up, this means that you have to pay a good 30 euros more than before.

For this reason, the federal government is planning to introduce a temporary tank discount from June.

As the Tagesschau reports, the

energy tax on petrol is to be reduced to the European minimum

for three months from June 1st

.

This would make gasoline 29.55 cents cheaper per liter.

This emerges from calculations by the SPD, FDP and the Greens.

With 50 liters of petrol, that would be 15 euros, which motorists pay less thanks to the tank discount.

The temporary tax cut will cost the state 3.15 billion euros for the planned three months.

Gasoline prices would still be significantly higher, but at least the 2-euro threshold would be temporarily undershot.

Tank discount could cause problems at gas stations

Although the new regulation is to apply from June 1, it is to be expected

that

petrol prices will only fall after a few days, according

to the Tagesschau newspaper.

According to ADAC, longer waiting times and queues at gas stations can be expected from June.

In addition, delivery bottlenecks could ensure that some drivers go completely empty-handed.

Anyone who deliberately does not refuel in order to benefit from the cheaper petrol prices in June should be aware of this.

The ADAC therefore recommends refueling earlier.
