Two men profited from fake lottos supposedly organized for charities. They were arrested by the police.

Two men were arrested Monday in Saintes (Charente-Maritime) and indicted for lottery fraud.

The case was lucrative, since the investigators estimated the damage at around 700,000 euros for 166 lottos in one year, we learned Thursday from the boss of the central racing and gaming department (SCCJ).

The scam was brought to light by information received at the SCCJ headed by Stéphane Piallat.

The two men, aged 36 and 59, known for various scams, organized lottos for what they presented as charities.

In fact, these associations were fictitious and the money from the lottos arrived directly in their pocket.

More than a hundred fake lottos

In one year, they organized 166 lottos, according to the investigators, who were able to establish that "109 lottos had brought in 410,000 euros" to the two criminals.

In total, at the rate of "three to four lottos per week", this must represent "about 700,000 euros", estimated with AFP, Stéphane Piallat.

Both men were charged and placed under judicial supervision.

They have, according to Commissioner Piallat, spent much of the money on casino games.

The town halls, which lent their village hall to receive these lottos, very popular in a large number of municipalities, are in no way responsible for the scam.
