Trailer for the movie "Kadima Kadima" (Lev Cinema)

"Kadima Kadima" is the kind of film that viewers and viewers go out with teary eyes.

His director, Mike Mills, cries quite a bit, and does not even have to go to the movies for it.

"I only cried yesterday. I cry all the time," he says in a zoom call to Walla!

Culture ahead of the release of the film in Israel.

"We live in an intense period in general, and a lot of things happen in my life as well. A man who cries, certainly if he is a white and straight man, snatches at it. It is not considered 'sound'. Even women I went out with did not like it, but in my eyes "An important trait. This sensitivity helps my relationships with players. I am super sensitive to what they do. In the end, the crying turned from something that gets down on me because of it to something that I get paid for."

"Kadima Kadima", which boasts a beautiful black and white photograph of the great photographer Robbie Ryan, arrives in Israel after a slight delay following the corona.

It came out in America last fall, and garnered rave reviews, fittingly starring one of the most respected actors of our generation - Joaquin Phoenix

Phoenix plays a radio man interviewing children about their hopes and anxieties - these are quasi-documentary segments featuring real, unfiltered kids.

The protagonist's sister goes through a crisis, following which he spreads his patronage over her son, his nine-year-old nephew, and joins him in his adventures.

The two go through a journey, which serves as a rupture for a double maturation process - of the child of course, but also of his uncle, who has never been a father himself, and for the first time ever takes on the responsibility of a parent.

Phoenix was not a father either during the filming, and became one immediately after them.

"I think he's going to be a great dad," Mills says.

"He's a person who moves on a very broad spectrum, but if I have to describe him, I would say he's a very sensitive person. Players are actually people who live in apartments without doors, so they have to be sensitive people."

"To me, you do not have to be a parent in the biological sense of the word to be a good father figure or to know how to behave with children, and Joaquin was the proof of that. I think everything makes you a good father, and I think being a father makes you a better person. "That I am a father myself, I am a more alive person and also a better director. This film did not make me rethink my parenting, but did make me appreciate more the dynamics between parent and child."

With all due respect to Phoenix, the real star of the film and the one who is putting out the tissue because of him is Woody Norman, the kid who plays his nephew in one of his first film roles.

At one point, he was even mentioned as a possible Oscar nominee.

"I told Woody's parents - think the filming of the movie is a party, that I'm her host and you are the guests," says the director.

"Everything that happens - is my responsibility. I do not know what I can do, but if you need something - I am here for you. It is clear that media attention brings with it a lot of pressure, and it is a bit strange to put it on a child's shoulders, To deal with it - it's Woody. "

Mills began his career as a graphic designer and director of video clips.

In 2005, he directed his first and most acclaimed feature film, "Sucking a Finger," and has since directed two more acclaimed films - "Beginners" and "Women of the 20th Century."

Mills has the ability to fuse words and images, so it’s no wonder that screenshots from his films star in a variety of Instagram accounts dedicated to quotes from movies.

"I do not know this world at all, but I am glad to hear about it," he says when I ask him about the subject.

"As a director, you spend years smiling at making a film, and then he goes out into the world and it seems like he's just gone, so it's nice that someone connects with him and preserves him in any way. What you told me is very significant to me, and maybe I should open Instagram."

"If you know someone who is looking for a radio presenter in Israel, tell me."

Your film is about radio, and the irony is that radio people and especially podcasters are today considered the next big thing, while we in the film world are seen as a thing of the past.

"I agree that we are less and less relevant in popular culture, but maybe that also makes us more subversive? I do not know what to tell you. 'Forward Forward' is not just a movie, but a film about emotions, and I feel that making such a film nowadays is a radical act. "I know

the

neighbor's lawn is always greener, but the work of radio people has always seemed more fun to me.

I would like to experience it as well.

"If you know anyone in Israel who is looking for someone to present a radio program, please recommend me."
