The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports
49,141 new infections
within 24 hours.
That is 22,910 fewer cases than on Wednesday a week ago, when 72,051 corona infections were reported.
The nationwide
seven-day incidence
drops to
281.8
from 307.2 the previous day.
158 other people died
in connection with the virus.
This increases the number of reported deaths to 138,643.
However, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent.
Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - due to overworked health authorities and because not all infected people have a PCR test done.
Only these count in the statistics.
In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.
In view of the falling number of corona cases, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach wants to relax the rules for entry into Germany over the summer months.
"We will suspend the 3G rule upon entry by the end of August," the SPD politician told the newspapers of the Funke media group.
The cabinet is due to make a decision on Wednesday
From June 1, travelers returning and other travelers no longer have to prove that they have been vaccinated, recovered or tested.
Travelers from virus variant areas currently have to go into a 14-day quarantine in Germany, even if they are vaccinated or have recovered.
According to Lauterbach, this regulation should continue to exist.
"If such areas are defined, those entering the country must be in quarantine," said Lauterbach.
"Even with lower incidences in summer, we have to remain cautious in a global pandemic." No country has currently been designated as a virus variant area.
According to information from the newspapers, the change in the Corona entry regulation is to be passed by the Federal Cabinet this Wednesday.
It also provides that in future not only the vaccines approved by the EU, but all vaccines approved by the WHO will be recognized upon entry.
