Fletcher, high school friend Vince Clark and musician Martin Gore teamed up to form the band "Composition of Sound", and later joined singer Dave Gahan in what eventually became Depeche Mode.
Gahan, Gore and Fletcher have served throughout the years as the hard core of the band.
Although not signed as a writer on any of the band's songs, as a keyboardist, Fletcher played a significant part in Depeche Mode's work, which was a worldwide success for more than three decades with huge hits such as "People are People", "Shake the Diseas", "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence", "Freelove".
He also played a role in the management of the band, as well as in resolving conflicts between its members.
In 2020, he and the rest of the band entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
