Tesla is considered the top dog among electric cars.

But in Europe, another electric model has the edge.

The Fiat 500 conquered the electric car bestseller list in April.

With 5,524 new registrations, the Italian microcar landed ahead of the Peugeot e-208 (3,370 units) and Skoda Enyaq (3,645 units) according to market observer Jato.

The best-placed model from a German brand was the VW ID.4 in sixth place with 2,982 new registrations.

The Tesla Model 3 didn't make the top ten -- though that's a familiar pattern early in the quarter when current inventory is sold and new shiploads aren't yet in Europe.

In the previous month, Tesla was still represented with two models in the top ten.

The Tesla Model 3 was number one with 23,013 new registrations.

The Tesla Model Y was two places behind with 18,968 new registrations.

Ford leads the way in plug-in hybrid sales

When it comes to plug-in hybrids, the Ford Kuga PHEV again tops the sales charts with 3,413 new registrations.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2,738 units) and Volvo XC40 (2,584 units) follow at a considerable distance.

The most popular car, regardless of the type of drive, was the Peugeot 208 with 15,615 new registrations.

The VW T-Roc (13,998 units) and Dacia Sandero (12,913 units) followed.

The all-time bestseller VW Golf did not make it into the top ten, which also included two other German models, the Ford Puma (12,601 units) and the Opel Corsa (11,834 units).

Ford Puma a German model?

That's right, because the Ford Puma comes from

Ford-Werke GmbH

, which is based in Cologne.

It is a subsidiary of the US Ford Motor Company.
