Tank full, wallet empty?

Or is your credit card suddenly on strike?

These tips will help you get out of this embarrassing situation gracefully.

Munich – In contrast to drivers of electric cars, those of conventional combustion vehicles have it relatively easy when topping up with energy: off to the nearest gas pump, fill up, hold your credit card or smartphone up to the reader of the cash register, or put down the hundred in cash (if that’s the case enough), and off you go.

Forgot money at the gas station: This is how it goes on

Unlike in many other countries, you usually get the goods first in this country and then have to checkout.

This system, which is actually very practical, becomes problematic if the payment does not work.

There can be two main reasons for this, which are not all that uncommon: Because card payment is not possible due to a technical fault (as was the case in many supermarkets recently) and you have little or no cash in your pocket, or because you simply have your wallet forgot/lost.

Forgot money at the gas station: Always be polite

After all, the fact that the fuel is already sloshing in the tank gives the driver a certain advantage in the subsequent negotiations with the cashier.

They don't want to have the fuel pumped out again, just like the driver, because that only entails (high!) costs and annoyance.

He will be more interested in a solution than when the driver confesses before filling up that he has neither fuel in the tank nor money, but has to go home urgently and will definitely come back to pay.

In principle, however, the possible solutions are the same in both cases:

  • Transfer the amount on the spot:

Does the tenant of the gas station have a bank or PayPal account?

Then the driver only needs his smartphone with activated online banking or the Paypal app (or a similar transaction provider like Revolut).

The outcome of the payment is confirmed immediately and can be proven to the cashier.

It is also sometimes possible to issue a direct debit authorization quickly.

  • Leave the car behind:

The best option if you don't live too far away, or if you can walk to home (or take public transport if you have enough change or a season ticket).

However, the attendant will insist that you move the car to the side and then give him the key.

The prerequisite for this path is, of course, that you still have enough money at home.

  • Leaving a deposit at the gas station

: A valuable wristwatch is reasonably good for convincing the cashier that you will definitely come back with money after driving away - here he can also estimate the value better than with a piece of jewellery.

Even a high-quality smartphone is a valuable deposit.

Since it is usually locked to third parties, no one can snoop around in it either.

On the other hand, the gas station attendant knows that it represents a higher value for its owner than the tank filling, even with the current high fuel prices.

  • Run to the nearest ATM:

This is a solution for the growing number of people who run out of cash and are then caught out by a card payment system failure.

Because if the card function of the cash register does not work, this does not necessarily apply to the ATMs.

  • Call someone:

Is there a family member or close friend who can help you out quickly?

Going through the favorites list in the contacts app or in messenger can bring salvation.

One of these solutions should definitely work.

What you shouldn't do: Engage in loud discussions, or simply speed away in your car (even if you don't have the criminal energy like this diesel thief).

Because almost all gas stations are monitored by cameras - and the police are probably there faster than you can get the money yourself.
