No more flat tires: Following Michelin, the American tire manufacturer Goodyear is now also testing airless tires – especially in the USA, they could solve a major problem.

Akron (USA) - A flat tire is an extremely annoying thing, but it's still a fairly common occurrence - made even more annoying by the fact that modern cars rarely carry real spare tires.

At best, a thin emergency wheel will appear under the floor of the trunk, or even just a spray can with sealant, which, however, cannot do much against many punctures.

After all, there are now some so-called run-flat tires on the market that allow you to continue driving at least at a reduced speed even with a hole.

But they share the fundamental problem with normal tires: For normal and safe driving, they need air with high pressure.

This is exactly where tire concepts that contain little or no air come into play.

The French manufacturer Michelin showed such a prototype with its Uptis at the Munich IAA Mobility.

US competitor Goodyear is now testing a similar product – and with Tesla it has probably gained a partner from the automotive industry who is considered to be particularly innovative.

Tesla with anti-flat tire technology: striving instead of air pressure

Tesla Model 3 has apparently been driving on a test track with the “non-pneumatic” tires, as Goodyear calls the development, for some time.

Instead of air, numerous internal struts provide stability. "The airless structure means that even if the tire were to lose a number of tie bars, the tire could go on for many miles without concern," explains Michael Rachita, Goodyear's program -Manager for airless tires.

Tesla with anti-flat tire technology: against tire pollution in the USA

In addition to the puncture safety, Tesla and Goodyear promise that in the future fewer defective tires will end up in the garbage.

Because this is a big problem in the USA in particular: Since many drivers there, unlike in Europe, hardly ever check the air pressure and, above all, older vehicles are not serviced in the workshop, the tires wear out particularly quickly and eventually fall off the rims – as shown by the numerous remains of rubber lying on and along American highways.

“Unfortunately, many conventional tires are disposed of early, e.g.

B. because of a flat tire or problems that could have been avoided, such.

B. too low air pressure that was not regulated,” Rachita complains about the throwaway mentality.

Since the Goodyear development works without any problems at speeds of up to 160 km/h, it could also be an interesting alternative to pneumatic tires and spray cans for German drivers of electric cars.
