There is always a topless surcharge for convertibles.

There are still a few cheap models.

Here is a selection.

The heyday of

convertibles

is over for the time being.

Below the luxury class, the range has shrunk permanently in recent years.

However , there are still

a few

inexpensive open-air models .

Here are the five cheapest

.

Fiat 500 C:

The little Italian has never been particularly cheap.

But since Smart has only offered the Fortwo Cabrio electrically, it still has the price-breaking title with its 19,490 euros.

The Italian does not lose the entire upper part, but at least the

fabric roof

can be pushed back like a roller blind.

The fact that the roof bars remain in place hardly spoils

the charm of the

retro vehicle .

For the drive there is a

1.0-liter three-cylinder with a narrow 51 kW/71 hp

, which is quite sufficient for relaxed cruising on boulevards or panoramic country roads.

Since 2020 there has also been a technically and visually independent

electric version

(87 kW/118 hp, range: up to 320 kilometers), which is significantly more expensive at at least 33,990 euros.

Smart Fortwo EQ

: If you want to drive open electrically,

Daimler's two-seater

is the cheapest - if you can get one.

The official price list currently lists the small car at 21,630 euros, which does not include the e-car subsidy.

Since the

delivery time

for the two-seater is currently well over a year

lies, but it is completely uncertain how much money the state will add in the future.

Ideally, the Smart could even recapture the title of prize champion.

However, the electric convertible with 60 kW/81 hp and a range of 160 kilometers (NEDC) is actually a pure city car.

If you want a chic look and faster charging technology, you also pay a lot more.

However, the short and crisp dimensions, the brisk acceleration and a friendly ambience compensate for the price-performance imbalance to some extent.

Mini Cabrio

: The

sporty small car

is already a lot of fun in the closed version, open even a little more.

At 26,450 euros, the Mini Cabrio is anything but a bargain, but it has been one of the residual value champions in all classes for years.

On the one hand, this is probably due to its classic design, which can be further refined with all kinds of accessories and ornaments if desired.

On the other hand, the handling is still nimble despite the recent increase in dimensions.

A lively 1.5-liter petrol engine with 75 kW/102 hp is used in the basic “One” model, but the four-seater only shows its true strengths in the “Cooper” variants with at least 100 kW/136 hp.

28,750 euros will then be due.

VW T-Roc Cabrio

: For many years, the Wolfsburg-based company had a quite respectable fleet of cabriolets in its range - the offer ranged from the Golf to the Beetle to the Eos, but it has long since been scrapped.

After all, the North Germans have provided a special kind of replacement: the topless crossover T-Roc Cabrio currently has no direct competitor in Germany.

The unique position in combination with the well-known Wolfsburg virtues in terms of operation, comfort and safety should primarily attract customers who want an

SUV

Don't just buy because of the space available.

With success: There were around 14,000 new registrations in Germany in the first full year of sales, 2021.

There is a choice of two petrol engines, a 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 85 kW/115 hp and a 110 kW/150 hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder.

Prices start at 31,850 euros.

Mazda MX-5

: The omission of the roof alone makes the convertible fun to drive.

The open-air feeling

is topped

by the Mazda MX-5.

The roadster combines fresh air with nimble driving behavior. Thanks to its crisp dimensions and

low weight

, a manageable

97 kW/132 hp from a 1.5 liter turboless displacement is enough

.

The equipment is no longer spartan, but basically puristic, which means that the two-seater ends up just over the 30,000 mark at 30,190 euros.

But the price can also be increased without any problems – for example, if you choose the larger engine or the retractable hardtop (from 32,990 euros).

This replaces the classic fabric top and makes the MX-5 completely winterproof.
