In Hilden, strangers massively cannibalized a BMW overnight - from the front, the 3 Series is hardly recognizable as such.

Hilden – Even a scratch in the paintwork of your own vehicle that you didn’t cause yourself is annoying – after all, it can cost quite a bit to remove it.

There is usually even more trouble when the car is broken into or parts are stolen: catalytic converters, for example, are currently very popular with thieves.

But what a 22-year-old BMW owner experienced in Hilden (North Rhine-Westphalia) is not exactly everyday: his 3 Series was massively cannibalized overnight – the police estimate the damage at around 20,000 euros.

From the front, the BMW 3 Series is hardly recognizable as such - the bonnet, front apron and numerous other parts were stolen.

BMW 3 Series cannibalized overnight: 20,000 euros damage - "madness"

At first glance at the photos of the cannibalized BMW published by the police, the vehicle is more likely to be in a workshop yard than in a public parking lot.

Because the BMW 3 Series is actually no longer recognizable as such from the front.

According to the officials, in addition to the complete front apron and the hood, several parts from the engine compartment are missing.

And: the inside of the vehicle doesn't look much better.

Because the thieves also struck in the cockpit of the BMW - and not too closely: They not only removed the navigation system and steering wheel, but also the complete fittings and the gear lever.

From the pictures it also looks as if at least one of the window regulators and the cover of the door handle have been removed.

The 22-year-old owner had parked the vehicle locked in the park-and-ride car park on Lindenplatz in Hilden shortly before midnight - around 5.30 a.m. two passers-by then discovered the "exploited" car and alerted the police.

That used to be a 3-seater cockpit: even in the interior, the BMW is hardly recognizable as such after the cannibalization.

BMW 3 Series cannibalized overnight: Police suspect use of a Flex

Officials assume that the parts stolen from the engine compartment were cut out - "possibly with a flex".

So far, however, there have been no concrete indications of suspects.

The police are now looking for witnesses.

Curiously, according to a study, parking your car in the dark also protects your car from thieves.

There are also some car brands that thieves like to ignore.
