A French company has introduced a 360-degree speed camera that works with lidar technology - and it can do much more than just photograph speeders.

Viroflay (France) – If you drive your car too fast, you may get flashed – at least that was the case for a very long time.

But times change.

Even noise sinners will soon be on the loose with similar technology – a corresponding pilot project is to start soon in the USA.

And there are even smartphone speed cameras now.

A problem with speed traps: They don't always trigger correctly - as this curious case with an Alpine A110 on a car transporter near Paris shows.

Another example: In Northeim, a speed trap triggered when pedestrians were sprinting.

In France, a company has now developed a speed camera that is said to be able to do significantly more than previous speed traps - thanks to the latest technology.

Speed cameras are currently aimed primarily at speeders – but a new device from France should be able to do much more.

Terror of traffic offenders: new all-round speed camera not only aimed at speeders

Many car fans are familiar with lidar technology primarily from the topic of autonomous driving.

It is a form of three-dimensional laser scanning.

And it is precisely with this that the French company Parifex has now developed a particularly powerful speed camera device: According to its own statements, "Nano" is the first speed monitoring system to be equipped with a 3D lidar sensor.

With lidar technology: New all-round speed camera can monitor entire intersections

In contrast to conventional speed traps, the nano measuring system does not need any special alignment: it can measure practically at a 360-degree angle - and thus also monitor complete intersections, among other things.

The device can be used both stationary and mobile and can also track several "targets" at the same time.

And it not only measures speeds, but also safety distances from vehicles.

And that's not all.

Lidar speed cameras should also be able to register crossing of stop signs

According to "L'Indépendant", the nano speed camera is also able to register crossing stop signs or red traffic lights.

As the company itself has now announced, the lidar speed camera has now been approved by the LNE (Laboratoire national de métrologie et d'essais), which is the French counterpart to the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt.

The lidar speed camera in France will soon go into the public test phase.

All-round Bitzer: According to the manufacturer, the device also withstands extreme weather conditions

According to the manufacturer, the nano system is insensitive to different light situations and can withstand extreme weather conditions.

The company does not reveal how robust the device is in terms of human violence.

However, this is also not entirely unimportant - because recently there have been repeated attacks on speed cameras.

This ranged from kicking over a speed trap to igniting and even blowing up a speed camera.

According to the manufacturer's description, the device can not only document traffic violations, but also collect general traffic data: For example, it recognizes pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and other vehicles, including their exact size and direction of movement.
