In Europe, the internal combustion engine no longer has a future.

In other parts of the world, however, the switch to electric cars will probably take much longer.

Boston (USA) – Now that the EU Parliament has also approved, the end for cars with internal combustion engines has been sealed.

Even climate-neutral fuels, so-called e-fuels, will probably no longer be allowed to power new vehicles from 2035: everything will come down to electric cars with batteries or hydrogen.

At least in Europe and a few other countries around the world.

But in some areas of the world things are likely to look very different: the petrol engine in particular will not die out after 2035.

At least that is the prognosis of the renowned management and strategy consultants Boston Consulting Group.

Even after 2035, many cars with internal combustion engines are likely to be sold worldwide.

Combustion engines will still be around for a long time – in the rest of the world

According to their study, the petrol engine will still be used in around 11 percent of all cars sold worldwide by the reporting date in around 13 years.

In another 43 percent of new cars, it does its job with the support of an electric motor - be it in the form of a mild, full or plug-in hybrid.

Electric cars with rechargeable batteries, i.e. so-called BEVs (“Battery Electric Vehicles”), make up the clear majority with a 45 percent market share.

According to the Bostonians, hydrogen-powered e-mobiles with fuel cells, known as FCEVs (“Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles”), will then account for one percent.

Combustion engines will still be around for a long time - but only as petrol engines

In fact, in South America, Africa and parts of Asia, for example, it will probably be a long time before electric drives become fully established.

The diesel, on the other hand, is disappearing – of its current market share of around ten percent, only one will remain by 2035 according to the forecast by Boston Consulting.
