According to the survey, the 9-euro ticket turns out to be a leisure ticket

Like to take the train to Sylt, but not to the office: the majority of 9-euro ticket buyers use the ticket for excursions. The offer appeals to many motorists.

Overcrowded trains, stressed travellers: the 9-euro ticket has caused a very large number of passengers on regional trains in Germany, and demand is huge.

According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), around 16 million have been sold nationwide since the start of sales around three weeks ago.

In addition, there are at least ten million tickets from subscribers, which are valid as 9-euro tickets for the three months of June, July and August.

Deutsche Bahn announced on Monday that, according to an internal evaluation, around ten percent more passengers were traveling in regional transport on the first two days of validity, June 1st and 2nd.

The same applies to June 7th and 8th, the two days after the long Pentecost weekend.

But who uses the ticket for which trips?

A survey by the opinion research institute Civey addressed this question and evaluated the answers of people who had not previously had a subscription - i.e. among the around 16 million ticket buyers.

This shows that people use the 9-euro ticket primarily for leisure activities.

As a result, only 32 percent stated that they use the ticket to go to work or do business trips with it.

Most use the ticket for day (55 percent) and weekend trips (33 percent).

It is also popular for shopping trips (47 percent).

For holiday planning, on the other hand, it hardly plays a role, although you could use it to travel inexpensively throughout Germany despite many changes.

But only nine percent want to go on vacation with the ticket.

The survey thus confirms the impression from the last few weeks: the trains were particularly crowded at the weekends.

And popular routes to the sea - for example to Sylt - or to other attractive regions in Germany were particularly affected by this high volume of traffic.

Most new monthly ticket holders primarily use their car before buying a cheap ticket.

71 percent said so.

Twelve percent traveled predominantly by bicycle.

Scooters and e-scooters only play a subordinate role at two percent - they are probably mainly used for short distances and tend to replace cycling and walking.

The ticket is mostly well received by users.

59 percent who bought it now (no subscription customers) see it as a helpful saving - these are mainly young people under 20 years of age.

Overall, 27 percent see little point in the ticket.

What is striking, however, is the relatively large number of undecided people: 14 percent of the more than 5,000 people whose information was evaluated stated that they had not yet developed an opinion on the question of the importance of saving.

However, the ticket is not necessarily a successful advertising campaign that will bring new customers to Deutsche Bahn in the long term.

When asked whether the survey participants wanted to use the bus and train more often after the campaign, only 27 percent answered "yes" or "rather yes".

50 percent have no need – 23 percent are still undecided.

Civey uses an automated process for the survey; anyone can take part online.

For a representative result, adjusted to the population structure of Germans, only information from certain, previously registered users is used.

In June, July and August, the 9-euro ticket allows you to travel on local public transport throughout Germany.

On the one hand, the tickets are intended to relieve consumers financially in view of the high inflation and, on the other hand, to make public transport more attractive.

There is not yet any precise information about the increased demand for buses and trains across all transport companies and associations.
