The migrant seriously injured by the police overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday during a chase near Nice died, the Nice prosecutor's office announced on Thursday.
The man "died yesterday (Wednesday) at the start of the evening", indicated Parvine Derivery, assistant prosecutor of Nice, confirmation of information from the daily Nice Matin.
This 35-year-old Egyptian was in the back of a van that forced a police roadblock and started a chase with the police between Sospel and Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).
The vehicle would have ended up rushing towards the police, according to them, forcing them to use their weapons, firing four times.
The van had finished its course in the sensitive district of Les Moulins and the driver, an alleged smuggler, as well as two passengers seated in the front, had managed to flee.
In the back, the police had discovered five people in an irregular situation, including the man who was seriously injured in the head.
He had been transported to the Pasteur hospital in Nice, in serious condition.
Two investigations were opened under the authority of the Nice prosecutor's office.
One, aimed at suspected smugglers, entrusted to the border police, for "helping foreigners in an irregular situation to enter and circulate in France", "refusal to comply", "aggravated by the danger to others" and "attempted homicide of a person holding public authority".
The other, for "willful violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority", was entrusted to the IGPN, which must determine whether the official was in a state of self-defense when shooting.
