The Robert Koch Institute registered 89,142 corona infections and 73 other deaths within one day. Meanwhile, general practitioners are calling for the vaccination centers to be closed in the summer – they are “empty throughout Germany”.

The corona numbers continue to rise.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports 89,142 new infections within 24 hours.

That's 11,506 more than Thursday a week ago, when 77,636 cases were reported.

According to the RKI, the nationwide seven-day incidence increases to 480.0 from 472.4 on the previous day (previous week: 276.9).

73 more cases of people dying related to the virus were recorded.

This increases the number of reported deaths to 140,099.

However, these figures are only of limited significance.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

Meanwhile, the German Association of General Practitioners has declared that it is unnecessary to keep the corona vaccination centers open in the summer.

"The vaccination centers are empty across Germany," said association president Ulrich Weigeldt to the newspapers of the "Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland".

It is not clear, »Why they should now continue to be operated throughout the summer«.

That costs a lot of money that is urgently needed elsewhere.

"The general practitioners have proven that the vaccinations are best taken care of in the practices." With a view to districts or regions with low vaccination rates, good experiences have also been made in many places in the past with mobile vaccination teams.

"It's a model that certainly makes sense for fall."

According to Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), the Federal Ministry of Health is working on a vaccination campaign for the coming months.
