A peak is expected during the night from Saturday to next Sunday, in Paris, where it will probably be 24°C or 25°C, at the coolest, and 18°C or 17°C only on the outskirts of the city, or even less.
This temperature difference is caused by what is called an “urban heat island” which is, moreover, amplified during periods of heat wave.
It is a measure of the higher night air temperature in the city than on the outskirts.
“It is not uncommon for the temperature in urbanized city centers to be at night, 4°C to 6°C warmer than in the countryside at the edge of the agglomeration”
, explains Valéry Masson, researcher at the CNRM , a joint CNRS and Météo-France research unit.
