The Mercedes EQE electric saloon car is another step by the German manufacturer in the world of electricity. What is the opinion after her first test with us and is the price worth it

The EQE is superbly electric and the Mercedes is pretty fine

After the variety of versions converted to electricity and the large electric EQS, it's the turn of the EQE to take the stage as Mercedes' representative in the electric saloon car category.

so how?

The EQE is another stage in Mercedes' transition to the electric world, a more advanced stage than the small EQA and the EQC that was its pioneer, both of which are based on its petrol cars.

The EQE and the big sister EQS are off cars based on a dedicated platform for electric cars.

The exterior design is the familiar look of the EQS, only in a sedan configuration and smaller dimensions.

Impressive in its variety, in its spacecraft innovation, but for some reason, does not transmit that Mercedes-style Passon of the traditional grill.

Are we in a world where like its cars, Mercedes is also changing customer base?

Its spectacular cabin design, too, is a kind of copy-paste of it from the EQS, with huge bright and spectacular displays, including the projection on the windshield.

The effect is impaired by the absence of the third screen in front of the passenger.

Here there is a plastic panel with a print of the Mercedes logo, a little less "luxury" and a little more wallpaper at the HMO.

Other than that it is the same wonderful MBUX system, one of the best if not the best in the industry today to combine richness of functions and simplicity of operation.

Only one problem in the field of operation - the price that the rear window pays for the design leaves a small groove of observation behind.

The cabin is impressive, high quality, but very different from what we are used to from Mercedes (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

In the senior Electric Art finish level, of the two trim levels, the list of accessories is very long, it's a shame to go through it all.

But two that are well worth considering for this level of finish for them - its rear steering and air dampers.

The quality of the materials in the cabin is high, even higher than the impression I remember from the EQS, but it's not the "shhh ..." that Mercedes used to leave in the air.

It's just a shame that in the strenuous run of not only being innovative and advanced, but also looking innovative and advanced, she somewhat abandoned the elegant and lounge-like look of the passenger compartments in the Mercedes dark brown leather, the heavy wood a kind of "old silver" citrus.

The list of safety systems is also fantastic, with everything you know or do not know but you will surely want it to be in an emergency.

The big benefit of using a dedicated electric platform is the ability to re-engineer the “infrastructure” of the car.

There is no engine so you can push the cabin forward, there is no drive shaft and complex systems of power transmission, so you can push it backwards.

And the result is an excellent wheelbase of 312 cm, which are for the purpose of comparing something like 20 cm more than the E-Class, so the space in the back seat is at the level of real luxury cars.

The trunk is less impressive -430 liters.

The EQE is currently offered with one propulsion version in Israel - the 350+.

Under the body there is one electric motor with an output of 292 hp and 56.5 kg.

The engine power is supplied by a 90.56 kg battery.

So true, 292 hp at a curb weight of 2,355 kg is not exactly a recipe for a particularly fast machine, and this is indeed the "entry version" of the paddles in this model. But still, the performance is good in all Reasonable Scale of Normal and Practical Use Because of the instantaneous power transfer and its availability, the actual sensations are more agile than the formal 6.4 seconds per 100. And anyway, nowhere is there a lack of power unless you came from a gasoline car from A to Z. D strong.

The ride comfort is excellent thanks to its air dampers, the damping of the potholes, the waves, the bumps is excellent and joins exemplary quietness in the insulated cabin.

Only on roads with a sequence of small fractures does shake and noise enter the passenger compartment - but this is the symptom of a disease called the 20-inch 40-inch rims. Maneuver and deploy like a super mini car.

Despite its exceptional capabilities to work hard on a winding road, it's not a fun car to drive, it's not sporty and there's not too much attempt to put the driver in a state of interest in what's going on. What it does have is this problem with the brake pedal when choosing the most powerful regeneration (energy return) mode - the brake pedal presses on its own according to the deceleration level.

Mercedes declares a range of 630 km between charges. It may be possible to drive so moderately that you can give up the car and ride the bus. M of range.

If you weigh in the dynamic part - we are already in the worlds of 400-415 km which is still beautiful for a car of its size. On the other hand, with the ability to get fast charging this story becomes one that can be lived with. Afcon's 150 kilowatts brought us from 34% to 80% in something like half an hour and to a full battery in 50 minutes.

Currently and in the current market situation, without direct competition from BMW or Audi, when Tesla Model S is slow to arrive and when the closest answer is the Genesis G80 electric which is a converted car, unlike the dedicated EQE.

Mercedes currently has the opportunity to once again be the first in the market and take advantage of this situation.

In any electric spell or in relation to other cars in general, it is an exceptional and very impressive product, with no real competition.

But in relation to the same added value of citrus, refinement and Mercedes style of yesteryear, whoever is looking for it - the EQE is already a different product, appealing to a different customer.

At a price that starts at NIS 500,000 and in the case of the car being tested, NIS 600,000, it definitely appeals to the more affluent customer.

But he should know that this time he will get an amazing electrical product, but Mercedes is pretty fine overall.
