Officially, autopilots are only permitted up to a speed of 60.

A UN commission would like to change that – one manufacturer in particular should benefit for the time being.

New York (USA) – Autonomous driving is currently one of the major goals of the automotive industry.

Tesla in particular is driving development forward, but often fails with its system called "Autopilot" due to the reality of road traffic - which often leads to serious accidents (with unexplained involvement of the technology).

Then there's Mercerdes-Benz: the Swabian carmaker is the first manufacturer to officially offer a Level 3 autopilot, and it's already available in the S-Class and the EQS electric sedan.

It expressly allows the driver to relinquish control of the car completely, for example to watch a film – but only up to 60 km/h.

This assistance system is therefore also referred to as a traffic jam pilot.

Autopilots are getting better and better: soon it will no longer just be a traffic jam pilot?

But that could soon change.

Because a department of the UNO, which has so far been considered to be more of a brake on too much technological freedom, is now stepping on the gas: The UNECE, the Economic Commission for Europe, wants to allow a top speed of 130 km/h in the future - i.e. normal motorway speed.

Long distances would then also be possible without the driver having to be ready to intervene.

It is still unclear to what extent the individual states will implement this recommendation (many Germans are still rather skeptical about autopilot).

She comes from the responsible working group, which had just put a severe damper on the self-proclaimed autopilot pioneer Tesla: In Europe, its FSD system (for full self-driving) is not allowed to leave the motorway independently, although it is said to be technically able to do so .

The driver must initiate this maneuver by operating the turn signal lever.
