The nationwide

seven-day incidence

continues to rise: According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the value is now

618.2

.

The day before it was 532.9, a week ago it was 427.8.

The incidence indicates the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week.

The number of known

new infections is 108,190

.

The day before it was 119,360 in the previous week: 28,118.

With this low value, the public holiday should have made itself felt in several federal states.

Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI - mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done.

Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics.

In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

According to the RKI dashboard, 90 other people died within 24 hours in connection with the virus.

The summer wave is fueled by more easily transmissible omicron sublines.

As expected, the BA.5 pathogen is now also predominant in Germany according to official data.

The proportion in a sample is 50 percent, according to the weekly report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Covid-19 on Thursday evening.

However, the information relates to the week before last, and higher values can currently be assumed.

The virologist Christian Drosten expects a very high number of new corona cases after the summer holidays in Germany.

»I hope that the school holidays will slow down the increase in the number of cases.

But from September, I'm afraid we will have very high case numbers," the head of the virology department at the Berlin Charité told SPIEGEL.

If nothing is done, there will be "a great many absences due to illness" in working life.

In other countries you can see that with very high case numbers, the number of hospitalizations and deaths rose again.

»Unfortunately, that will also be the case with us.

Overall, however, far fewer people will become seriously ill and die than in 2021.«

The RKI weekly report states that the burden on the health care system, especially in the intensive care area, has increased again slightly in the past week.
