Scarce in the supermarket, tons in the car tank: There are great reservations about the use of cooking oil in biodiesel.

A study seems to confirm it.

Brussels (Belgium) – Clean and climate-neutral: Biofuel is actually a fine thing.

Despite this, adding vegetable oil to fuel is a highly controversial issue.

For example, out of (unfounded) concern about engine damage, but also for ethical reasons, many drivers hesitate to refuel their petrol engines with Super E10, which contains a ten percent organic admixture.

Controversial: Biodiesel.

In the federal government, too, the promotion of biofuel from food and feed is controversial, the counting of the so-called THQ quota (from which e-car drivers can also earn money) is to be omitted in the future.

A study by Transport & Environment (T&E), an organization of non-governmental associations for sustainable transport, confirms that the concerns are not entirely wrong.

Criticism of bio-fuel: 17,000 tons of oil burned

According to T&E, 17,000 tons of rapeseed and sunflower oil are burned in bio-diesel - every day.

This corresponds to the almost unbelievable number of 19 million bottles of cooking oil that are dumped into car tanks and burned for mobility every day, while they are scarce and expensive in the supermarket.

Worldwide, 18 percent of the vegetable oils that are also suitable for consumption are processed into biofuel.

Consumption is particularly high in Europe: 58 percent of all rapeseed oil and nine percent of all sunflower oil have been used in cars and trucks over the past five years.

In addition, there is half of the imported palm oil and a third of the soybean oil.
