From Naples to Bari by electric, on a special coast-to-coast from the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic.

Mercedes has chosen the scenarios of southern Italy to test EQA and EQB and the infrastructures of the territory.

Two latest generation electric SUVs of the three-pointed star brand in a unique place from a landscape point of view, but still not completely ready for electric mobility, with a fast route between motorways and state roads.

A difficult test bench, therefore, chosen precisely for these characteristics that highlight the autonomy and reliability of the vehicles involved in the test.

Mercedes, the tour of the two seas in electric

The smaller of the two SUVs is the best-selling of Mercedes' all-electric models.

The brand has long been adding battery-only propulsion to all models, to the point that the thermal and BEV ranges are almost overlapping.

On the other hand, explain from the House, the EV Only direction is marked and inevitably will have to lead the States to strongly increase the recharging systems in the area: currently 28 thousand, located in 11 thousand stations.

On the part of Mercedes, meanwhile, the commitment is to offer an ever wider choice to customers who switch to electric.

And so, for example, EQA is available with 4 different engines, from 190 to 292 HP, and with a maximum range that now reaches 531 km in the WLTP cycle.

A clearly winning strategy,

ANSA Motori participated in the 'Giro dei due mari', a route of over 300 km covered for one half at the wheel of EQA and the other with EQB.

The characteristics of EQA are those that we had told extensively during our test a few weeks ago, and which can only be confirmed.

Great ease of use, excellent reactivity, extreme silence and driving comfort fully suited to the needs of the trip.

Despite the air conditioning always on to counter the heat, two passengers with luggage on board and above all the fast route which is certainly not ideal for electricity consumption (there is little braking, and little is the energy regeneration), the consumption calculated by the on-board computer certifies a range of well over 300 real km.

Absolutely sufficient to tackle even a long journey, if in the presence of fast charging systems.

In about half an hour, the time of a coffee, the battery is again charged to 80% and ready to guarantee other hours of travel.

A pit stop for full energy was carried out at the Ionity plant near Potenza.

Also with regard to infrastructure, Mercedes is implementing a series of measures to make the supply of energy cheaper.

With Mercedes Me, in fact, the company has brought together all the energy managers in a single card, allowing more convenient access to each column on the national territory.

The offer, then, 'comes in three': from the one without any fee, which provides for the adoption of the tariff of the single provider, to the paid ones - respectively 4.90 and 16.90 euros per month - which allow access to each column , even ultrafast, at a fixed price of 0.58 and 0.31 euros / kW.

The second part of the journey, from Potenza to Bari, is at the wheel of EQB.

Here, the road becomes winding at times and, thanks to a flawless road surface, it also allows you to test the vehicle's SUV characteristics.

While energy consumption is obviously high on long descents at a constant speed, regeneration effectively recharges the battery.

The driving qualities of EQB are in full Mercedes style: comfort, silence, safety and convenience.

EQB, like EQA, is also available with power from 192 to 292 hp for a distance of 474 km in the WLTP cycle.

The consumptions we tested are almost comparable with those of EQA.

Once in Bari, a few hours of driving and 300 km behind, the battery is still sufficiently charged to travel at least another hour on the road.

This experience confirms that electric mobility is possible, but it is essential to be able to count on a capillary network of charging infrastructures.

As for the vehicles, Mercedes is ready.
