"Man vs. Bee" Trailer (Netflix)

Cinema likes to portray bees as bastards.

One of the most stinging examples was “My Girlfriend,” in which the tragic death of the boy played by McCauley Kalkin due to the bites of flying insects caused many around the world severe trauma and phobia.

Then came the remake of "The Straw Man," in which the protagonist played by Nicholas Cage dies in similar circumstances, not to mention the 1978 star-studded disaster film "The Swarm," in which deadly bees threaten the safety of an entire city and a host of horrors. Similar hymns.

In fact, humans are far more harmful to the planet than bees, which have recently joined the list of endangered species.

They need to be protected, not incited against, but the new Netflix series is called "The Man Against the Bee", and as its name implies it presents them as enemies, which is just one of its drawbacks.

This is another collaboration between star Rowan Atkinson and screenwriter William Davis, who worked together on three "Johnny English" films, and director David Kerr, who directed the third and final episode of the series.

As usual, the player embodies the ultimate luck, which sows destruction on the right and left.

Of course you would not want to let one keep your house, but a well-dressed British couple makes this mistake, and entrusts them with his glorious estate, which has everything, including a dog in need of a special diet and valuable art paintings that a gang of thieves would be happy to get their hands on.

Among all these, there is also one bee, which does not give the hero a rest.

Shlomiel develops an obsession with her, chases after her in every corner of the house and decides to catch her no matter what.

But not only does the chase end in nothing, but this hunt leaves scorched earth and enormous perimeter damage - even for those who have watched the nine episodes of the series to the end.

These things are written by an Atkinson fan - not only of the TV series "Mr. Bean", which is not necessarily controversial for its genius, but also about the "Johnny English" films that are less popular with critics.

We smeared honey on these hits here, but "Man Against a Bee" is a big disappointment.

First of all, this is a pointless series.

True, Atkinson's works have always pushed the boundaries of good taste, but this time he's exaggerating.

Fulfilled beekeeping - obviously this is a silly series, and it will not aggravate or solve the climate crisis.

But this comedy abuses other animals as well, most notably the family dog, Cupcake, who goes through life-threatening pains here.

Necessary spoiler: he survives, but that does not justify what came before.

True, this can be bypassed-but not unless you're a techie who knows what he's doing.

In this context,

Even the scene in which the protagonist finds himself smeared with feces following the gastronomic challenges of the four - legged man is not a merry spectacle.

There is a limit!

In an interview with Variety, director Dave Kerr likened the man's hunt for the bee to the chase for the whale in "Moby Dick."

It's good that he did not compare himself to the Bible. In Atkinson's earlier works there was brilliance and depth. Here, it is not clear what he wants from the bee and what she wants from him. Her design in CGI is not successful, and neutralizes any sting from it. There should be no less personality and character than him. Here it does not happen. The whole series is made with a rough hand, and its marketing content is particularly direct. manufacturer.

Crossing the border.

"Man Against a Bee", in short, turns out to be a crude, sloppy and disappointing work.

At least she's passing fast.

The first episode lasts about 19 minutes, but the other eight episodes - about 11 minutes each, and sometimes even less.

I mean, this is actually a full-length movie, spread out in nine pieces just to conform to the conventional binge format nowadays.

This is not a series, not even a limited series - it's a stinging exercise.

The odd format is sometimes reminiscent of a sequence of stories on Instagram.

The "series" seems to appeal mainly to children and youth, and it is possible that in this way it adapts itself to their abilities of attention and concentration.

Those who are too young to remember Atkinson's previous works and this is their first encounter with him, may still enjoy his discovery.

As for everything else, "The Man Against the Bee" has no value, except perhaps for the moral: If you planned to bring someone into your home to keep it during the upcoming summer vacation, watching it will deter you from doing so.
