Trailer for the movie "Where's Anne Frank?"

(Cannes Film Festival)

The Israel Film Academy today published the list of films that will compete this year for the Ophir Awards in the various categories.

First of all, the best feature film category.

The winner of this category automatically becomes the Israeli representative in the battle for the American Oscar.

Since "Footnote" more than a decade ago, no full-length feature film made in the country has crept into the Hollywood ceremony.

Two facts should be noted: First of all, there is no filtering in this category.

Any movie that wants to sign up - enters the picture.

The films are screened for members of the academy, who choose the finalists in the various categories, and then also the winners of course.

Second thing: not every movie is entered into a competition, for its own reasons.

"Rises to the Top" of the refreshment channel and Daniel Adar, for example, does not compete, although the distributors mark it as one of the biggest hits of the year.

Still, if you look at the 26 competing films, you can get an interesting picture of contemporary Israeli cinema, for those who are still interested, of course.

Let’s start with a sad and amazing fact: Of the 26 films, only four were made by women, indicating the meager amount of full-length feature films made here by directors.

This is not the fault of academia of course, but the fault of the entire film industry.

The four films are Michal Winick's "Valeria Marries," about Ukrainian women marrying Israeli men;

And "All I Can" by Shiri Nevo Friedental, with Anya Buxtein as the attorney representing a client in a sexual offenses case.

And there are also two films starring Dana Ivgi: "Savoy" by Zohar Wagner and "Cinema Savaya" by Orit Fox Rotem.

"The movie scene is white and judgmental. I'll fight it as long as I'm around."

It is also interesting to note that no less than three films deal with the Holocaust - a subject that Israeli feature film has not dealt with so much in recent years.

This is Ari Folman's "Where's Anne Frank," which has already been released, and two films that have not yet been revealed to the Israeli audience - Leon Prodovsky's "My Neighbor Adolf", about a Holocaust survivor living in South America and convinced that his neighbor is the Fuhrer;

And "June 0" by Jake Paltrow (yes, brother of), on the Eichmann trial.

The American director worked here according to a screenplay by Tom Shoval, who will also compete in the academy with a film he directed himself - "Remove worry from your hearts", which also has an international appeal.

He speaks mostly English and stars Bernice Bezzo in France, who previously won the Lead Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival.

In this context, it should be noted that even in the category of best short film, there is a "Holocaust film" - "Letter to the Pig" by Tal Kantor, one of the most talented young filmmakers in the country, and who was signed to the masterpiece "Other Words".

Of course it is impossible to know anything at this stage, and we have not watched most of the films, but here are a few more names that are likely to pick up a host of nominations.

Shemi Zarchin is one of the most successful directors in Israel, and his previous films have always starred in Ophir.

After an eight-year hiatus, he returns to the movies with "Silence," starring Maurice Cohen, about a talkative TV man whose former student becomes the leading candidate for prime minister, even though he sucks his mouth off and doesn't say a word.

Erez Tadmor also previously starred in the ceremony, with films such as "Wounded Land" and "Good News," and this time he presents "Nobody's Children" starring Roi Assaf about a man fighting for the future of the shelter where he grew up.

In the hot section, we will also mention the "worried citizen" of Idan Hagoel and the "karaoke" of Moshe Rosenthal.

As of this point in time, they are two of the only ones competing this year at a significant international festival - the first at the Berlin Festival, the second at the Tribeca Festival.

What more?

Of course, it is impossible to ignore "Virgins", the full-length autobiographical film by Maor Zaguri, whose filming began five years ago, and which seems to have been brewing quite a bit in the editing room.

In the veteran fox section, the "Flower Gate - Bab al Ward" is the Moroccan-speaking speaker of veteran Haim Bouzaglo, and the "Gospel according to Judah" by Dan Wellman.

On the other hand, in the firstborn sector we find Liran Sheetrit's "Burning Land" which deals with the youth of the hills;

Eyal Kantor's "Get Me", the only one of the contestants who declares himself to be "18 and older";

And "How You Let It Happen" by cousins Yair Asher and Itamar Lapid, both descendants of aristocratic families of local cinema (Yair Asher is the son of the editor and director Tova Asher, Itamar Lapid the son of the late editor Ara Lapid and Nadav Lapid's brother).

Their film features Moran Rosenblatt, who also stars in Eitan Anar's "The Good Soul."

Surprisingly, only one film deals with ultra-Orthodox society - "Barren" by Mordechai Vardi starring Millie Eshet on a pair of childless Breslavs.

While "Release My Edge" last year and "Rise to the Top" this year chose not to sign up for Ophir, some comedies have chosen to do so - "Hummus Paul Trailer" which is currently showing in theaters, "Married" by Eran B. which was screened a few months ago, And "Love You Charlie," the new film by Shai Kanot, the only Israeli director to direct a full-length film with Gal Gadot ("Shoshana is a central pioneer") and here works with Noa Kirl, who is also now making her way to Hollywood.

It should also be noted that many of the films this year deal in one way or another with the proud community.

In addition to some of the names already mentioned, such as "Concerned Citizen" and "Accept Me", there is also Nitzan Giladi's "As if there is no tomorrow", who broke out with the wonderful "Paper Wedding", and "The Swimmer"

And last but not least, the beloved "Snowland" by Yoni Zichholtz, which has already been released, and "The Road to Eilat" by Yona Rosenkiar, his second film after the excellent "The Dive".

Few of the films mentioned above have been commercially distributed.

A small portion has been screened at local festivals, a small portion has been screened at international festivals and most of the films have not yet been exposed to any audience, and academy screenings will be the first way to see them.

In the documentary sector, however, the pace is different.

Many of the contestants have already been screened at festivals, halls and even on television: for example, "Dr. Morris' camera", which won the last Dokaviv festival; "Black Notebooks" by Shlomi Alkabetz about his late sister Ronit; War in 1948 and whitewashing them. If this docu is nominated for the award, there may be politicians who take advantage of it to make some noise. This is the place to mention that the ceremony will take place in the fall - that is, during the election period

. Dates for the various stages of the competition It is not known when the finalists will be announced and it is not known when the ceremony will take place.
