Their names were Muhammad, Maryam, Serkaut, Zanyar… Twenty-seven men and women united by the deadliest migration tragedy ever in the English Channel, the preferred crossing point for candidates for exile dreaming of England since the pressure growing on French land and port routes.
These illegal immigrants, two of whom were only minors aged 7 and 16, perished on the night of November 24, 2021 in the sinking of their makeshift boat off Calais (Pas-de-Calais), while they were trying to reach the English coast.
An unprecedented disaster which had aroused a wave of emotions among the political class but also diplomatic tensions between Paris and London, each party trying to put the other face to face with its responsibilities in the management of the flow of migrants.
