Refueling is expensive - but there are still a few tricks at the pump that can save a lot of money.

For example, by filling up at the right time.

When the fuel tank needle approaches the red area, many drivers break out in sweat.

Because since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, fuel has been extremely expensive.

However, it is better to refrain from adventurous savings measures, such as replacing diesel with salad oil.

It is all the more important not to give away a cent at the gas station.

If you fill up at the

right time

, you can save a lot of money.

What is the cheapest time to fill up?

The

prices at the petrol station

change frequently during the day – it is therefore important to strike at the right time.

The ADAC analyzed all price movements at around 14,000 petrol stations in Germany in May 2022.

It turned out that fuel is generally more expensive in the morning than in the evening.

After a continuous price level during the night, prices rise significantly from around 5 a.m. - to reach their peak around 7 a.m.

It usually doesn't get as expensive as it is at this time of the day for the rest of the day.

Save money when filling up: preferably in the evening at the pump

However, according to the evaluation, there are other

price peaks:

around 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 8 p.m. and from 11 p.m.

The most important finding:

Petrol and diesel are cheapest between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

– but you can also refuel inexpensively between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Even if you save money: If the fuel nozzle clicks, you should stop filling up.

Depending on the savings, it may be worth filling the reserve canister.

According to ADAC, the right time is particularly worthwhile for

diesel drivers:

Here the difference between the most expensive time (7 a.m.) and the cheapest phase (between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.) is 16 cents per liter.

Converted to a 50 liter tank filling, a proud 8 euros can be saved.

Owners of petrol engines cannot save quite as much, but the 10 cent difference is not to be scoffed at here either.

With a 50 liter tank filling, you can still save 5 euros.
