The new Skoda Fabia is the latest addition to Volkswagen's super mini trio of cars. The 1.5 engine provides good performance, but we have a problem with this version

The new Skoda Fabia: The Countess of Monte Carlo

The new Skoda Fabia is no longer so new, but it has only just arrived in Israel.

The senior "Monte Carlo" version equips it with a sporty performance.

But 135 thousand shekels ?!

More or less since it started operating under the umbrella of the Volkswagen concern, Skoda has positioned itself as the one that offered the best car deal for the shekel.

With the use of the same platforms, engines, assemblies, gearboxes each offered its own direction.

A seat with a young and sporty appeal is also relatively cheap, but also with an image that did not always suit everyone.

"But hey," Skoda said, "want to pay more for having a Volkswagen logo on the car? Please, want to pay a lot more because it has the Audi logo? Please."

And indeed from the Czech with its glorious history came a sequence of models ranging from the Fabia, the Octavia, the Superb, the Kodiak, the Kamik - all excellent deals in their categories for those who put the practicality before the pose.

But sometimes, with all due respect to practicality and an umbrella compartment at the door, someday even the aunt from Mazkeret Batya comes to feel coveted, to show everyone that she too knows how to turn heads for the young guys.

So here it is, the Skoda Fabia in the "Monte Carlo" version has come to make everyone pose with red lipstick and low-cut, thin rubber heels.

Just before we talk about it, let's dwell on the basis here.

Is the latest to make use of Volkswagen's compact platform, the MQB A0, last but not least.

With overall length, wheelbase and large trunk from its concerns to the concern and its competitors in the segment.

In terms of conservatism in Skoda's designs, it can be said that the exterior design is one of the company's distinctives.

Sharp, angular and in this version also with color combinations, a black panoramic roof and light rims in two shades that make the business stand out even more.

The cabin in this version enjoys a significantly better look and materials than the base version.

Dashboard trim, seams, colors, sports seats, mood lighting in the dark.

Invest.

Here and there you can find hard, hard but high-quality plastics, so she passes the knock-knock-hit test nicely.

The Fabia is at the excellent seam point of the entire group's cabin in that it accepts the digital dashboard (10.25 inches) and the 8-inch multimedia screen, but still leaves physical buttons for climate control and multimedia operation.

Where does she fall?

When you want to enter the menu of climate control then all the business has to be done from the screen.

And it is made badly and it requires far too much attention.

Well, really Skoda, not for you and not for interest.

This level of finish is the highest in the model's offering and includes a very long list of LED lighting in the front, 5 USB sockets in the cabin, the panoramic roof from the top, and up to a set of solutions for anchoring a charger in the back.

The list of safety systems is also satisfactory;

Automatic braking includes pedestrian detection, lane departure correction, adaptive cruise control.

The big bonus that this car gives and here no matter what version you take is the rear seat, not only because it finally has a super mini with USB sockets and air vents for those sitting here, but also thanks to the excellent space that 256.5 cm at the wheelbase allows. Super mini that can be used by small families, and also in the trunk, not only 380 liters, but as usual a variety of hanging, storage, covering and anchoring solutions.

The Monte Carlo finish level is marketed with the 1.5-liter engine only.

This engine, along with the 1.0-liter is what you will find in almost every model of the Volkswagen Group, it is the motor version of the melted cheese on all the dishes of "Yotvata in the city" if you lived in the late 80s and throughout the 90s.

I'm pretty sure the hand dryers at the global Volkswagen headquarters have these engines.

Here, too, it delivers 150 hp and 25.5 kg, but unlike the Kodiak or Tiguan Allspace, here it carries much less car and therefore arranges a nimble performance for it.

And it's not that 8 seconds is something that spurs traffic light racing, but it's always nice to have the power reserves for lightning detours.

The DSG gearbox combined with this engine works just fine, with almost no small vibrations and lack of refinement in the low gears.

At the end of the test days, the fuel consumption was 14.7 km per liter. It is reasonable for a car that drags you to look for opportunities to take advantage of its nice stable.

The road behavior is good considering that this is not really a sporty version of the model, if you exaggerate with the expectations from it in turns you will find that after the initial stage of high grip from Continental Sport Contact 215 mm wide, it still has a rear tension beam and there is a limit to any trick. If so you're in the prank section then you can play with her tail a bit in leaving gas in turns. But

all this performance that also includes 18-inch rims and a 40-inch tire cut is also her biggest problem. While the shock absorbers themselves do a good job of restraining the body and absorbing bumps, in everything As for small disturbances it does not miss any crease or crack and if you have found a smooth enough road, then it is only the noise that bothers.

A combination of practicality with a sporty performance, but there is a price (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Summary

A separate test for its 1.0-liter version will be performed soon.

But with regard to this version, the conclusion should be separated into three parts.

The car, the engine and this version.

As for the car: the new generation of the Skoda Fabia continues to do what previous generations did and increases to do literally when there is its strength.

Design is a matter of taste, armature is a matter of standards, even human engineering is a matter of habit.

But dimensions are an objective function and air conditioning ports are a necessity of Levantine and all this with lots of storage compartments in the cabin and useful trunk create the car that puts the emphasis on "super" in the super mini group and a significant gap from competitors like Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai i20 and certainly in front of Toyota Yaris.

Regarding the engine: pleasant, flexible, powerful.

Its combination with the dual-clutch gearbox is good.

And in general it is always nice when there is as little car as possible with as much power as possible.

In its case it also comes with very good fuel consumption.

And again, these would mean that you have to spend for these processes.

Regarding the version: I'm sorry, but except for the one who really owes this pose of all the sporty features, I find no real justification to prefer it over the same combination of propulsion unit and gearbox in the "Style" finish level, which will also reduce its price tag by 6,000 shekels. 135 thousand shekels.
