The unexplained return of octopuses to Brittany

With a very rapid growth, and a lifespan of about one year, the animal is very sensitive to environmental conditions, and its numbers always vary very strongly from one year to another.

In the summer of 2021, the fishermen of the Glénan archipelago, in the south of Brittany, had a funny surprise.

Instead of the lobsters and crabs they were looking for, they only brought up octopuses in their traps.

The cephalopods had only made a few bites of the precious crustaceans!

“For five to six years, we had been collecting isolated testimonies from a few fishermen who had occasionally caught octopus, but last year the catches were really high, so much so that a hundred boats went to target the animal in the south of Brittany”

"With a fairly advantageous selling price of 9 to 10 euros per kilo for octopus, this new resource has a real economic interest."

Octopus vulgaris

, especially likes warm waters.

Its rapid proliferation in Brittany may therefore seem surprising at first sight.

Could this be a direct consequence of the effects of global warming...
