Electricity prices are climbing to record highs: the cost advantage for electric cars over combustion vehicles is melting away.

Leipzig – A constantly growing group of motorists can look at the high fuel prices with some composure: the owners of electric cars.

Even if column operators like Tesla are turning the price screw and free charging is becoming rare, the energy costs for electric vehicles have so far been significantly lower than those for combustion engines.

But that could soon be over.

In a relatively short space of time, electricity prices have skyrocketed like never before: on the important Leipzig energy exchange EEX, they climbed to 310 euros per megawatt hour at times.

That corresponds to a good 31 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh): an increase of 320 percent within one year.

Charging an electric car will probably be significantly more expensive in the near future.

This is due to the high prices for fossil fuels due to the Ukraine war, which are now affecting the electricity price.

Many electricity suppliers recently increased their tariffs for private households, not even taking into account the current price hike.
