The debate that has lasted more than a decade: Android or iOS?
Mobile consumers are arguing over the pros and cons of operating systems, but in the meantime Apple and Google are making them almost identical.
So how do you choose the right device?

Android or iOS? (Photo: ShutterStock)
Every few days I find myself trying to slip out of an incendiary corridor discussion, with one side of the arena standing with an ardent and determined Android supporter, and on the other side a sworn iPhone player, unwilling to listen.
I've been developing for mobile for about a decade.
During these years, dozens of different devices passed through me, from the popular ones among them to the various flagship devices of the various companies - Apple, Samsung, One Plus, Shiomi and more.
As time goes on, I notice that the differences between the operating systems are disappearing.
Android is approaching iOS, and vice versa.
Closed, but a variable
Apple has created the iOS operating system in closed code that works only on its devices - iPhones and iPads.
The company is the one that exclusively controls what happens in its products.
This is in contrast to the Android operating system (of Google and others), which exists in devices from a variety of manufacturers, each of which adds its own interface and features.
As a result, iPhones are perceived as more secure devices.
Apple has not changed the way it works over the years.
But what has happened is that more and more capabilities that characterize the competing operating system Android, have found their way to iOS.
Bio-rest, Apple has added support for displaying image within image, expanding widget capabilities, night mode, displaying messages in the message center and more - all of which were only added in 2020.
Tightening security on
Android, which is based on open source, Google has invested most of its efforts in a unique user experience.
Anyone can substantially change the appearance of the interface, and advanced users can actually change the behavior of the operating system (Rom Customization).
In recent years, Google has invested a lot of effort in hardening the operating system as we know it from iOS.
The company has introduced changes in Android such as - requesting permission for location services, privacy dashboard, which centralizes the activity in applications that work in the background, restrictions on network access and restrictions on access between applications.
These were also added in 2020.
So what will make you switch sides anyway?
Apple, Google, and the various smartphone manufacturers will on the one hand continue to produce differentiation and uniqueness, but on the other hand also copy features from each other.
Bottom line, the choice of operating system should be based on convenience and price.
Pay attention to size and weight, physical buttons, gesture activation, fingerprint and facial recognition, camera and battery quality (and there are no shortage of online reviews to check these out).
The price ranges of smartphones have increased significantly in recent years.
On the one hand, there are the flagship devices - the iPhone 13 and the Galaxy S22, which cost more than NIS 4,000.
And on the other hand, there are cheap devices, like the Shiomi Redmi Note 11 which costs only about NIS 500 and is excellent, so much so that I bought two such devices for my sons.
Stand out what is your next device?
Just do not consult with friends, it will end in a heated discussion without conclusions.
