The vehicle registration document must always be with you in the car.

Anyone who loses it should quickly apply for a new one.

However, the prices are different.

Munich – Each of us has lost something at some point: It doesn’t matter whether it’s headphones or money, it’s always annoying.

If the lost item is also the car keys, it can also get really expensive in the worst case.

It often takes time to get a replacement.

However, it is quicker if you lose your vehicle registration document or part 1 registration certificate, as the document has been officially called since 2005.

In addition to the vehicle owner's personal data, the vehicle registration document also contains technical information about the vehicle.

“The document must always be carried in the car and presented at a police check.

In the event of loss, as the owner of the vehicle, you must provide a replacement as quickly as possible,” explains ADAC.

In the event of loss, the new vehicle registration document can be applied for at the responsible vehicle registration office.

However, if the document was stolen, this must be reported to the police beforehand and a report made.

"You need this theft certificate for the new application to the registration authority," emphasizes the ADAC.

This also applies in the event of loss or theft abroad.

In both cases, the loss must be reported to the local police.

Have a police confirmation issued to you - you need this for a possible vehicle inspection and for the new application for the vehicle registration document.

To apply for a new vehicle registration document, make an appointment at the local registration office.

Some of these can be conveniently reserved online.

You should find out in advance which documents you need from the relevant authorities and bring them with you to the appointment.

The following documents are usually required for a new application for the registration certificate part 1:

  • Identity card or passport (with registration certificate)

  • Proof of the valid main inspection (HU report)

  • Registration certificate part 2/vehicle registration

  • Affidavit of loss

  • The police report theft

However, the costs for the new application for the vehicle registration document are not regulated nationwide.

Depending on the federal state, authority and required documents, the prices are between eleven and 50 euros.

As a rule, the new registration certificate part 1 is issued immediately.

If this is not possible in exceptional cases, you can continue driving for a week with the issued declaration of loss.

By the way, anyone who is unable to show the original vehicle registration document during a police check must pay a fine of 10 euros.

A copy will not be accepted.

If you take this with you, it must be clearly marked as a copy so that there is no suspicion of document forgery.
