Gender debate, particle accelerators, fracking: Recommendations from the science editors

2022-07-09T08:00:23.437Z

The new gender debate is based on a misunderstanding. There are only two genders. And still a lot.

But far from it.

The show initially caused an uproar on social media.

At the beginning of June, it found its way into a dossier entitled "Ideology instead of biology in the ÖRR", with which a group of scientists criticized the alleged false reporting in public broadcasting on the subject of gender.

The starting point is always "the false claim that there is a variety of genders or intermediate stages between man and woman," says one appeal.

Things escalated this week.

The Humboldt University in Berlin canceled the lecture given by one of the authors of the dossier for “security reasons”, planned title: “Why there are only two sexes in biology”.

And now 160 scientists and journalists from eight European countries are following up with a manifesto in which they call for the »protection of our children from transgender ideology«.

"As scientists and experts, we firmly oppose the assertion that women and men are only social constructs and that gender is a mere question of feeling," says a draft of the letter, "one is born a girl or a boy."

So the central question: Are there only two genders, man and woman?

Or are there many?

I think the argument is based on a misunderstanding.

And everything is a matter of definition.

It goes without saying that a male and a female germ cell must connect in order to reproduce.

There is also a surprising number of transitional forms in the expression of the various sexual characteristics in humans.

Designating these as separate sexes might raise the hairs on the back of most scientists.

gift.

It is also undoubtedly advisable to consult a psychologist and get good advice before undergoing sex reassignment surgery.

Appropriate offers of help for young people and adults must become a matter of course in this country.

On the other hand, every single person defines his or her gender in different ways that are unique to him or her. Sometimes they follow a trend and eventually notice it.

In the vast majority of cases, however, he can hardly do otherwise.

Psychologists and social scientists have been dealing with this topic for decades.

The societal debate on gender is comprehensive, sometimes aggressive, and perhaps even disturbing for some.

But that's a good thing.

As long as young people with transgender identity in Germany are six times more likely to attempt suicide because they feel bullied and marginalized, it is sorely necessary to address gender identities, how society treats transgender and intergender people and their discrimination.

The mouse can and should help too.

Mr. and Mrs. Mustermann have to put up with it, even if they studied biology.

Kind regards,

Philip Bethge

A total of 19 specimens of the rare species traveled from a wilderness area in South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique in the past few weeks.

The rhino migration stretched over 1,600 kilometers to spread the species and thus secure its future.

In the next two to three years, conservationists hope to relocate more than 40 white and black rhinos.

    1.

Transgender people experience their gender identity as not - or not only - matching the gender assigned to them at birth.

According to estimates, there are between 2,000 and 100,000 transgender people in Germany.

    2.

Intersex people are born with genetic, anatomical and hormonal sex characteristics that do not conform to medical gender norms of male and female.

The Intersex Society of North America states that one child in 100 newborns has such physical characteristics.
