Dampener for Elon Musk: The Chinese electrical manufacturer BYD has increased its sales significantly and dethroned Tesla as king of the industry.

Austin – For the US electric car manufacturer Tesla, things are not really running smoothly at the moment: The brand new plant in Grünheide near Berlin, which opened after long delays, has now had to stop production again.

Tesla also recently got bad marks for customer satisfaction.

Now another setback for company boss Elon Musk (51): The Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD (Build Your Dreams) has overtaken Tesla in terms of electric car sales.

Setback: Tesla is no longer number one in terms of sales in the first half of 2022.

According to a statement, the Chinese electric car manufacturer, in which investment legend Warren Buffet (91) also has a stake, sold more than 640,000 vehicles in the first half of 2022.

An extreme increase of around 315 percent compared to the same period last year.

Tesla, on the other hand, reported sales of around 564,000 cars for the first half of the year.

BYD sells more electric cars than Tesla - but also includes its plug-in hybrids

However, BYD summarizes its electric cars under the term NEV (New Energy Vehicles) – and this includes not only pure electric vehicles, but also plug-in hybrids.

And the proportion of part-time electric vehicles in the total number of vehicles sold is not exactly small: it was almost 50 percent in June.

BYD completely stopped the production of pure combustion engines in March.

Recently there had been controversy about job cuts at Tesla: In an internal email, Elon Musk announced a ten percent reduction in jobs at the electric car manufacturer.

Shortly thereafter, however, he backtracked and declared that the number of permanent employees should be reduced and that more temporary workers should be hired.
