In the dispute over the future of the environmental bonus for electric cars, there is finally an agreement.

However, it remains unclear when exactly the funding will end.

For months there was a dispute in the traffic light coalition about the future of the environmental bonus for electric cars.

Environment Minister Robert Habeck wanted to extend the purchase premium again - as stipulated in the coalition agreement.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner, on the other hand, wanted the subsidy to expire and was heavily criticized by the manufacturers' association.

Ultimately, the Green politician prevailed, because the environmental bonus will be extended, but for how long remains unclear.

What is certain, however, is that subsidies for plug-in hybrids will expire at the end of the year.

The same applies to the purchase of electric company or craftsmen's vehicles, for which there should also no longer be a purchase premium.

However, the amount paid out for the environmental bonus will also drop significantly from 2023.

Electric car: Environmental bonus remains - but decreases significantly

For cars that cost less than 40,000 euros, there will only be 4,500 instead of 6,000 euros from the state.

In the future, there will still be 3,000 euros for more expensive electric cars, as the

Handelsblatt

reports with reference to government circles.

There is still no purchase bonus for vehicles with a purchase price of 65,000 euros or more.

However, it is still unclear how the manufacturer's share of 3,000 euros will continue.

The exact end of the promotion of electric cars is also unclear.

The funding should run until the total of 2.1 billion euros for 2023 and 1.3 billion euros for 2024 have been paid out.

This means that there is still a risk for customers of not getting anything because of the long delivery times, since the bonus can only be applied for when the electric vehicle is registered.

Electric car: Manufacturers criticize the reduction of the environmental bonus

There was sharp criticism from the President of the Association of the Automotive Industry, Hildegard Müller.

She told the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers that the cut in funding was "disappointing".

In addition, the decision is “a heavy damper on the incentive to buy an electric car”.

"Due to the additional cap on funding and the unclear award date, the premium threatens to become a gamble for consumers," emphasized Müller.

According to

, the car expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer made a similar statement: "The traffic light slows down the electric car!" However, a recent study shows that many customers are not deterred by the loss of the purchase premium and will buy an electric car.
