The year 2012 marked a turning point in the cellular sector in Israel with the revolution led by then Minister of Finance Moshe Kahlon.

The cell phone, which until then was mainly a device intended for talking, sending SMS messages and some emails and news, has since become our best friend that centralizes almost all areas of our lives.

The Pelephone company prepared a special report to mark the tenth anniversary of the mobile revolution that shows how the revolution affected our lives and how it turned the smartphone into something we simply cannot do without.

According to the report, what led the revolution, apart from the issue of price, is mainly the improvement of mobile browsing: before The mobile surfing revolution was quite slow, surfing volumes were low and some Israelis did not surf at all via the phone.

Speed and browsing volumes are increasing all the time, especially with the transition to the 5th generation, speed increased compared to 2012 by 700%-800% on average and browsing volumes increased compared to 2012 by more than 2600%.

The increasing use of surfing led to the flourishing of the WhatsApp application, which replaced SMS almost completely.

According to Pelephone, since 2012 there has been an 85% decrease in the volume of outgoing SMS messages.

However, there is currently a 20% increase in the number of call minutes per person.

In addition, the messaging application contributed to the "disappearance" of the popular messaging programs that were before it and were mainly used on the computer such as: Skype, MSN Messenger, and Viber.

Less money, more subscribers

According to a report by tmforum that made a global comparison of the prices of mobile surfing and ranked the countries from the cheapest to the most expensive, Israel is in the first and very respectable place with an average surfing cost of $0.05 per 1 gigabyte. For comparison, in Italy, which is in fourth place, we pay per gigabyte -Browse byte $0.27, in France, which is in 11th place, we will pay $0.41, in the USA, which is in 154th place, we will pay $3.33, and in South Korea, which is in 180th place, we will pay $4.72.

The mobile revolution not only increased the use of the mobile device itself but also the number of subscribers in the market:

In 2002, the number of cell phone subscribers in Israel was 6.5 million subscribers for a population of about 6.6 million people, which means 0.98 cell phone subscribers per person.

In 2012 there were 9.5 million cell phone subscribers out of a population of 7.9 million people - the ratio jumped to 1.2 cell phone subscribers per person.

Today there are about 11.5 million cell phone subscribers out of a population of about 9.5 million people - about 1.2 subscribers per resident in Israel, which means the ratio between 2012 and 2022 is maintained.

"The revolution that we have seen in the scope of browsing is gaining further acceleration with the introduction of the 5th generation, which will increase our use of cell phones and the consumption of services through them," explains Dror Bhatt, vice president of marketing for Pelephone, yes and Bezeq International. "Beyond the fact that the cell phone has become a computer, a wallet and A tool you can't do without, the speed of surfing today is approaching the speed of a landline connection and uses that in the past we traditionally reserved for the home computer are also moving to the mobile device.

In addition to watching movies and series at high speed and quality, we will also see new services that have not been seen before, such as full medical examinations, vehicle control and more."

The decade of Google

The operating systems of smartphones today are almost completely controlled by Apple's iOS and Google's Android, this is in contrast to many operating systems that existed in the past (anyone remember BlackBerry OS?) and they operated mainly on 2G and 3G networks which were relatively slow and the surfing was accordingly.

Today's devices work on the 4G network and the newest ones also on 5G - the fastest network.

The speed also allows us to operate other devices remotely (smart home), which seems imaginary in 2012.

According to Pelephone's report, the best-selling smartphone in 2012 is Samsung's Galaxy S3, which was announced in May of that year, and in second place is the iPhone 5. In third place is the iPhone 4S, which was announced a year earlier.
