A group of students from Korchak School in Kiryat Motzkin last week launched a research capsule above the ozone layer, as part of a satellite tracking mission.

As part of the activity, which was done as part of the "Young Academy" in the city and which was also carried out to collect meteorological information and to photograph the Earth.

After the launch, the capsule reached the Sea of Galilee after encountering westerly winds in the western layers of the atmosphere, and encountered an easterly jet gust that brought it back closer to Haifa Bay.

When the capsule reached an altitude of 110,000 feet as planned, the air prediction balloon exploded - and it slowly returned to the ground using a parachute.

The capsule landed in the agricultural areas west of Ebalin.

The equipment that was on the capsule was transferred to the laboratory, where they collected the sampled data.

Noam Segal, CEO of the Imagest satellite company that donated to the space course, said: "The company supports as a matter of routine activities in the periphery, and it welcomes the cooperation with the young academy, which makes it possible to emphasize the importance of the field of satellites and space exploration in Israel to youth throughout the country and to make accessible the the field in an experiential and special way.

The support was made with the view that joint projects of this type can help strengthen the roots of the next generation of Israel's space scientists."

Tsiki Avisher and Aviv Levy from the Young Academy summed up the experience: "The high regions of the Earth's atmosphere are a fascinating medium for learning and research among teenagers. They have characteristics similar to deep space, such as high radiation, zero air mass, a temperature that drops to minus 60 degrees and a black sky dome. This gravity still works, which allows us to get the research equipment back."
