Germany wants to become independent of Russian gas imports as quickly as possible.
Liquid gas from North America should help, and new gas fields off West Africa could also play a role.
Germany itself sits on a huge gas reserve that could cover demand for many years.
However, the promotion is prohibited by law because the so-called unconventional fracking is associated with environmental risks.
The ban has been in effect since 2017. In the meantime, a commission of experts set up by the Bundestag has examined the risks of the technology.
So far, however, politicians have not wanted to deal with fracking again.
This could change now.
Because not only the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder calls for a reassessment in view of the Ukraine war and the energy crisis.
