The burnt surfaces remained limited, but a mother and two children aged 10 and 12 are being prosecuted for having caused fires in the Gard.

The first fire, lit by a mother in Gajan, was put out fairly quickly.

The balance sheet is therefore far from the hundreds of hectares ravaged in the Gard department or the thousands destroyed in Gironde or in the Bouches-du-Rhône.

The two fires, however, mobilized already overstretched firefighters.

In this village about fifteen kilometers from Nîmes, a third of a hectare of brushwood went up in smoke overnight from Sunday to Monday.

Seen nearby, a local resident was arrested.

On Wednesday, before the Nîmes criminal court, Annie, 55, mother of a 14-year-old girl and "welcoming at home" for elderly or dependent people, apologizes but does not explain why she set the fire.

Two children charged

Elsewhere in the Gard, two children aged 10 and 12 were indicted for "destruction by fire".

In Pont-Saint-Esprit, at the confluence of the Ardèche and the Rhône, half a hectare of vegetation burned on Monday.

On the indications of the neighborhood, two friends of 10 and 12 years old were arrested the next day.

The two children were indicted for "destruction by fire".

They were presented on Tuesday to an investigating judge seized for "destruction by fire", indicated a judicial source.

They admitted to having lit a campfire, which they failed to control, according to a source close to the investigation.

Both boys are not at risk of being subjected to coercive measures due to their very young age.

Arsonists with different profiles

In two other departments in the south-east of France, very different profiles were arrested and suspected of having set the fire.

In Ardèche, a man in his forties admitted to having caused several outbreaks of fire which ravaged 1,200 ha last week.

He was indicted for "arson", a crime punishable by 15 years' imprisonment.

A volunteer firefighter from Hérault admitted in police custody to being the author of several fires, explaining his actions by the adrenaline rush they caused.
