How many fires is he responsible for?

This is the question to which the Pyrénées-Orientales gendarmerie tried to find an answer, after having arrested a 22-year-old young man at the start of the week.

Questioned by the police, he admitted to having started several fires in recent days, reports Actu.fr.

The gendarmes were able to trace this young man after the description, by several witnesses, of the same vehicle seen leaving the scene very shortly after the fire started on Sunday in Espira de l'Agly and Salses- the castle.

The evidence of the gendarmes collected during a search of his home could only force him to confess.

At least four fires to his credit

The 22-year-old revealed to investigators his involvement in four fires in the Pyrénées-Orientales department in recent weeks.

He will be tried in immediate appearance in the coming days.

In addition to the mega-fires in Gironde, several fires also affected the south-east this summer hit by a historic drought, with in particular 1,600 hectares going up in smoke south of Avignon in mid-July.

At the end of June, 1,800 hectares had also burned at the French army training camp in Canjuers (Var).
