A traffic sign has spread on two German autobahns.

Its function is an indication of the future of motoring.

Germany – Very few drivers know each and every one of the more than 400 traffic signs in Germany.

After all, the approximately 20 million signs that have been put up include all sorts of curiosities, to which a particularly unusual specimen has been added in recent years.

It may even be a harbinger of the future of driving (more on cars and traffic at RUHR24).

Traffic sign: A black and white sign joins a curious landscape of signs

Again and again, drivers in German inner cities or on the autobahn encounter largely unfamiliar traffic signs, which, if ignored, can have serious consequences in individual cases.

The General German Automobile Club (ADAC) has neatly listed the applicable danger, regulation, additional and other signs as well as the traffic facilities on its website and provided the relevant explanations.

Very few road users know in which category this new traffic sign is to be classified.

The still comparatively young traffic newcomer is round, designed exclusively in black and white and has an unusual combination of various geometric elements.

These properties clearly distinguish it from the StVO traffic signs.

Road Sign: Landmark sign not relevant to humans, only relevant to certain vehicles

The largely unknown traffic sign will certainly have confused one or the other driver.

Is this a new indication of a tunnel?

Or is there a warning about a nearby obstacle?

Not at all.

Because the total of 13 signs, which are approximately 2.5 kilometers apart, are irrelevant for German drivers, who recently revealed dangerous knowledge gaps in an ADAC test, and can be ignored.

After all, according to

Chip

, it is a so-called landmark sign.

These are not intended for people, but for autonomous vehicles.

Traffic sign: 13 landmark signs in southern Bavaria are used for car tests

As the Federal Ministry of Transport explains, self-driving cars can determine their exact position based on the signs on the sign.

This works using the longitudinal and transverse positions.

However, according to the Autokiste

portal, localization is

not the main purpose of the landmark signs.

Rather, it is a matter of "define precisely measured fixed points in the test area, which serve to calibrate test data and open up the possibility of comparing several such test data/drives exactly".

The landmark signs are only used for traffic tests, as RUHR24 reports.

Traffic sign: Oddities are in the "digital test field Autobahn"

So far, the simple landmark sign can only be seen on the A9 in southern Bavaria between Plattenhofen and the Holledau motorway triangle and on the A93 to Wolnzach.

The car and traffic portal Autokiste

suspects that the landmark signs will hardly adorn other roads and motorways because of the risk of manipulation and the high level of effort involved

.

The landmark signs that have been set up are located in the “Digital Autobahn Test Field” established in 2015.

The car industry can really let off steam there.

Traffic sign: The auto industry and the Ministry of Transport are dreaming of autonomous driving

Because nearby companies such as BMW or Audi can "test future-oriented systems and technologies in real traffic, such as sensors, measuring devices, communication between vehicles or with the infrastructure," explains

Autokiste

.

The reflectors for laser and radar sensors attached to the delineators and protective devices are also helpful.

Even if the landmark signs are only used for test purposes and only locally, their role in relation to future car driving is probably not insignificant.

After all, successful tests also increase the probability of more and more self-driving vehicles on Germany's roads and motorways.

Politics does not stand in the way of this development, reports the

Augsburger Allgemeine.

On the contrary: The Federal Ministry of Transport has formulated the ambitious goal of bringing vehicles with autonomous driving functions into regular operation by 2022 and thus allowing their use, at least for the time being, on company or exhibition grounds, for example.
