The fuel costs can vary greatly when you are on holiday by car - and also depend on which state you fill up on the road.
Even if the fuel price has meanwhile moved away from its record levels and the tank discount is at least partially noticeable, filling up a car remains an expensive pleasure.
This is especially true during the holiday season along the usual main travel routes.
The front runners on the price table are the gas stations at the motorway service stations, where the Federal Cartel Office even expressly warns against filling up with fuel.
However, not everyone has the time and nerve to leave and look for cheaper alternatives.

But it may be possible to influence in which federal state you take a refueling break.
Because among them there are sometimes significant differences in the cost of filling up the tank on the motorway.
As an evaluation of the comparison portal
Mehr-Tanken
has shown, in Rhineland-Palatinate, the liter Super E5 cost an average of 2.23 euros at the beginning of this year's summer holidays.
The prices were similarly high in North Rhine-Westphalia, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria - i.e. those federal states of all countries that car tourists have to cross on their way to western or southern countries.
It was significantly cheaper to fill up at the motorway service stations in the east of the republic: Brandenburg had the lowest prices in Germany at 1.89 euros.
Filling up on the way through: It depends on the time of day
However, the prices fluctuate greatly during the course of the day, the difference between the high and the low was up to 17 cents during the study.
As a rule, refueling in the evening is cheaper than in the morning.
Pulling up to the pump at the right time can be almost as good as doing it in the right federal state - and of course you save the most when you can combine both.
