A bath that turns to tragedy.
A child died by drowning on Thursday August 4 in Valence d'Agen in the Tarn-et-Garonne.
The two-year-old boy was on vacation with his grandparents and escaped their supervision for a few minutes by falling into the pool early Wednesday evening.
According to our colleagues from La Dépêche du Midi, the child had been airlifted to the Toulouse-Purpan university hospital center, in absolute urgency.
He was in cardiopulmonary arrest when the firefighters arrived in the garden of the house, around 8 p.m.
Before transferring him, the emergency services managed to resuscitate him.
500 drowning deaths each year
In the town of Valence d'Agen, the tragedy caused great emotion.
Mayor Jean-Michel Baylet and his deputy went to the scene of the accident to support the grieving family.
A few days ago, a three-year-old child also died drowned in a swimming pool, in Gimont, near Toulouse, in the Gers.
According to a survey by the Health Watch Institute, accidental drownings lead to more than 500 deaths each year in France.
In children under 15, they are the second leading cause of accidental death, after traffic accidents.
