Who needs Arnold Schwarzenegger when there is an actress like that in his place?

"Prey", the new movie in the "The Predator" series, went live on Disney Plus, and takes the plot to the Comanche tribe at the beginning of the 19th century.

Into Schwarzenegger's shoes is a young and fairly unknown actress, herself an American-born by origin, and despite some reservations - it works

"Prey" movie trailer (HULU)

Star rating for movies - 3.5 stars (photo: photo processing, .)

Arnold Schwarzenegger celebrated his 75th birthday about a week ago.

On the occasion of the event, various sites around the world published a parade of his best films, and almost all of them starred "The Predator" - the classic thriller from 1987, in which he played a special agent who was sent to the jungles of Guatemala on a rescue mission, and met a bloodthirsty extraterrestrial who hunted him and his friends there.

Since then, the "Predator" won several pawns - three of them direct, and two as a side project that pitted this alien against a creature from "The Eighth Passenger".

None of them, needless to say, rose to the level of the original.

Now comes another pledge, "Prey" which, in contrast to its predecessors, was streamed directly around the world.

With us it is available on Disney Plus.

Please do not confuse it with a film with the same Hebrew name that was originally called "Beast", and will be released in our country at the end of the week.

The film, again like the spirit of the times, stands as a kind of prelude to the previous chapters, and describes to us how it all began.

It takes place in the prairies of North America, at the beginning of the 18th century and among the Comanche tribe.

This time, the place of the special agent played by Schwarzenegger is taken by Naru, one of the young daughters of the tribe.

Her environment looks down on her because of her age and because of her gender, but all that changes when the Predator arrives on one of his first visits to Earth and attacks the Native Americans, and she turns out to be the only one capable of fighting back.

Naru is a young girl, learning to discover and prove herself, and the predator is also like that - unlike the extrovert in the original film, who was much more experienced, this time he is still getting to know the people and their customs and feeling his way, so in a way we have two parallel coming-of-age stories here .

"The Predator" starred two actors who would later become governors - Schwarzenegger, as I remember, was later the governor of California, and with him was also Jesse Ventura, a former wrestler who became an actor and then did another professional retraining when he was elected governor of Minnesota, and was thus also registered as the only candidate of the Reform Party In the foundation of Ross Pero who deserved to be elected to such a senior public office.

Either way, there are no stars in "Prey".

Almost all the actors are Native Americans, and not household names.

Amber Midhunter steps into Schwarzenegger's shoes.

Her father David is both an actor and a native American, and her mother Angelique is in a band.

She was born in 1997 and has been appearing in front of a camera since the age of 14. Her television breakthrough was in the series "Legion", but she has not yet had a prominent film role.

"Prey" allows her to prove her skills in the film as well, and she does it with distinction.

Her performance is impressive, overwhelming, exciting and refreshing.

Who needs a boomer like Schwarzenegger when you have her?

There is no doubt that we will hear a lot more about her.

Behind the camera was Dan Trachtenberg, the American-Jewish director who, among other things, signed the first episode of "The Boys" and does a skillful and effective job.

If this horror thriller came to the cinema, it would probably last two and a half hours, but streaming has different rules.

The result lasts only an hour and a half, and during this time we are served non-stop action.

The script is compact and to the point, without unnecessary fat.

Its character is almost chamber.

The only characters are the heroine, her brother and the rest of the tribe, the animals around them and of course the predator.

Other than that, the only ones joining the celebration are a bunch of French-Canadian fur traders, the kind we met in The Reborn Man, and Prey makes their character too cartoonish and flashy.

devours the screen.

In the best tradition of "The Predator", the violence here is graphic.

Already in the first minutes we envision a predatory snake gnawing, then a predator skinning the snake, and later on come images that are not easy to digest, including severed limbs and the like.

The viewing restriction is for ages 16 and up, and the film is not afraid to be bloody or even disgusting, and to put the characters through severe torment.

The heroine does not go anywhere without her faithful assistant - a wild dog of the American dingo breed (Carolina dog).

She is played by a dog named Coco, who steals the show from the humans, and her display has already become a topic of conversation online.

The dog also faces many physical dangers, and since there are those who are not ready to watch the movie if a dog dies during it, we will allow ourselves to make a small spoiler and reassure: the dog also survives the end of the movie.

Coco forever!

Steals the show.

No one longed for a new film in the "Predator" series, but the decision to move the plot to this place and time proved successful, and provided the film series with a fine and welcome twist.

Watching the movie is fun, but there is a caveat.

For me, "Prey" suffers from the same problem as its predecessors, and the problem is that the predator himself was and remains a hideous, repulsive and one-dimensional character.

There are cinematic monsters, King Kong for example, for whom it is difficult not to show a certain sympathy, and even want to give them a hug.

The Predator, on the other hand, is the least interesting thing in the film series that bears his name, yet he and she move on.

It is likely that soon we will see another pawn starring the bloodthirsty extraterrestrial, but it is also likely that it will also be uploaded directly on streaming.
