A “worrying” groundwater situation in July

2022-08-11T14:38:47.945Z

The Geological and Mining Research Bureau (BRGM) announces that groundwater levels are at a “very low” level in mainland France.

The situation is "

worrying

" for a large number of groundwater tables in mainland France in July, due to a "

significantly lower than normal

" water recharge during the winter and the ongoing historic drought, according to the bulletin of the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) published on Thursday 11 August.

"

In July, the emptying continues and all the aquifers observe falling levels

", indicates the BRGM.

"

This observation is not surprising, given the absence of precipitation

", according to the French public geological establishment, which notes however that the level of the emptying is slowing down "

on many layers, probable consequences of the rains at the end of June and the reduction in levies

” thanks to the restrictions ordered in almost all departments.

However, the situation remains worrying for a large number of aquifers which show low to very low levels

”, in particular in the “

center-west (Poitou, Brenne, Maine, Touraine)

” and in the “

south-east (Bas Dauphiné , Provence and French Riviera)

”.

The levels are unsatisfactory

,” insists the BRGM.

July 2022 was in France the month with the least precipitation (9.7 millimeters) since March 1961 (7.8 mm), and the driest July on record since 1959. Despite thunderstorms and the rain expected in From Sunday, these “

rains should not succeed in infiltrating in depth

”, the too dry soils favoring runoff, explains the BRGM.
